Folklore wrote:It is told that in the past, our ancestors had a peaceful existence. The dark shadows of malice hung at the very corners of their world, held back by the goddesses; Layru, Fii, Ein. The land lived in peace for many years before the power that once held back evil faded. A hand of darkness spread across the land, quickly grabbing up every corner of the light. The only solace was within a small village that had yet to be touched by the malevolent forces. Only known to the elders, the princess was hidden away amongst them. She carried three objects with her; a hand harp, an ornate shield, and a circlet.
As evil ran rampant beyond the village, the villagers lived a blessed life as they prayed for the darkness to recede. The princess played beautiful music for them with her harp; giving ease to their worries. Then; one day the music faded from the village. The gloom of darkness seemed to have seeped into the village if only just briefly. But their Light, their innocent princess was stolen away from the safety of the village. However; none dared leave the village out into the dangers of the evil ruled world. But one young boy stood up to the fears of the villagers and took only a slingshot and a makeshift shield out into the world to find their beloved princess.
It took months to take down the enemy strongholds, to bring back the courage of the people to help stand up to the dark ruler. But with his bravery and hard, dangerous work, the castle was besieged by the people. Leading the charge, the young boy now held a wondrous sword and the ornate shield that had came to the village with the princess. Both shining such light to banish the evil from the land. With an earth shaking battle that raged for what seemed like an eternity; the boy hero struck the villainous king with glorious light, sent by the goddesses, sending the evil forces back to the world beyond.
The land had it's Light back, and the sacred items that helped the young hero in his quest were scattered back into the world by the goddesses in case they needed to lend their power to a new hero. Years of peace followed; though the dark fingers scraping at the edges of the land went unnoticed.
D r e a m s wrote:Sometimes I have strange dreams.
My fur is matted, damp and frayed. It whips in tufts while other parts fall in dense clumps of condensed white and murky black. I feel the cold sensation of water running by my feet, though pollution courses through it the feeling is still pleasant compared to the humid atmosphere hanging all around me. The pressure of the air itself is crushing, and feeling it's weight on my shoulders I curl into a ball and simply stare up at the single window in this trap. The walls around me are made of bricks, well worn and aged. Forgotten. The word brings with it sorrow that washes over me like a wave, and as I drown in its chilling embrace my eyes snag on the window once again. Thick metal bars cover it, and through it's threshold are passing shadows and a desperate trickling of tainted yellow light. To my eyes so accustomed to the dark, the light seems foreign and intimidating, so I shy away from it and hide instead in the dampness of the dark. I watch the shadows pass. There was a time I pleaded for help. I stood with paws extended to reach out and make it known that I was there, that I was alive, that I needed help. But no one ever stopped for me, or even batted an eyelid.
I took alternate roads to stay out of sight all those many months.
But that only kept me out of mind. In seeking a better home, a better life, I lost a part of myself I could never retrieve. There was a hole in my chest, and I began to think it would never close. All that was left to do was keep running down the endless path that stretched before me, though run as I may the horizon never seemed any closer. As my legs grew sore and my breath grew shaky, I noticed that it seemed I had made no progress at all, and I fell to my knees before the sinking sun. Panting I allow a faint whimper to escape my lips. Resentment bubbles inside of me, but not for the endless torment I must endure but for my lack of ability to conquer it. One day I will reach the end of this dream. I know it.
There were many faces.
And each with judging eyes as I passed scorned me without words. They didn't need to voice their concerns, certainly I'd heard them all. Yet still they tried, speaking insults to deaf ears and voicing threats to a body with numb nerves. They were foolish, though I never righted them. I allowed their ignorance, and walked on as if I didn't hear them. I pretended their words never reached me. Once I was gone and forgotten, the world around me blurred into a mess of hues. I balled my fists angrily, clenching them so tightly my nails dug into my palms. There was no one now. No one to see my weakness. As a familiar dampness greeted my cheeks, I was powerless.
D r e a m s wrote:As soon as my eyes fluttered to a close, I was greeted with a familiar face. One I had not seen in so long, I was puzzled as to why they would need to see me again. While it was obvious to me that I had seen them before, I could not place them. Their face was somehow both clear and blurred, seen and unseen, and as they opened their mouth I failed to grasp their identity.
"Who are you?" The voice whispered tantalizingly, condescending with a knowing sense that was impossible. The voice itself was also muddled yet defined, foggy and yet right in front of me my eyes were refusing to accept whatever it was that I saw.
"Toby" I replied bluntly, flashing a glare. This was stupid. What was the point of this ridiculous endeavor?
"Toby who?" The face blurred more with those words, and both fear and anger sank their teeth into me. I'd left that name behind a long time ago, and there was no way I was turning back on that resolve now.
"Just Toby." I snarled, making sure my point was clear. As I did so, I watched as the creature of mystery melted and vanished into nothingness as well as the scene around it, leaving me in a completely white room with no end or beginning. I was left to wander for some time before slowly and drowsily my eyes opened again. Even more tired than when I fell asleep, I hesitantly awoke.
D r e a m s wrote:I sighed, alone again. These dreams, if I could call them that, were always lonely. There was never anyone, in fact there was always nobody. Nobody at all.
I felt a thin smile slip it's way across my features, after all it had become known I was Nobody. Looking around I noticed the familiar dark dampness of the barred room and the wetness between my toes, but... something was different. There was a shadow lingering before the grate, and after a moment or two of simply staring I awoke with a jolt and no explanation.
D r e a m s wrote:"Get him!" The men had called after me, bounding with weapons in hand. I may have bitten off more than I could chew stealing from these guys, but what choice did I have? There was no money and no one else for miles. Then again, a group of muscular men with peas for brains didn't particularly scare me at the time. I could tell they wouldn't find me, now it was just a matter of time.
"Where'd 'e go?!" One bulky man brooded, angrily slumping his club over one shoulder. The others looked at one another and shrugged. They'd never once laid eyes on me, they'd only noticed their stuff missing recently. At that point they suspected something, and today they heard it.
"Was that noise just an echo?" A brute suggested, glaring at a cave no more than ten feet from them. The assumption wasn't too farfetched, I suppose.
"Suppose so." Shrugged the others, and like their doubts they too soon vanished back into the brush as clueless as when they had first arrived in search of something they now deemed simply an echo. A hollow repetition of something that already was.
D r e a m s wrote:"Here you go, little boy." The kind but ragged man had chimed ever so pleasantly as he handed me a small roll of bread. Charity was rare in these times, the notion was foreign to me. The man himself was no spectacle, he had long frayed blond hair and dreary, beaten brown eyes. His clothes were torn and his body was covered in bruises and bumps. I noticed his ribcage protruding from his sides at either end, and hesitantly I nudged the roll back to him in protest.
"Take it, go on." He offered a warm smile, but I simply shook my head. How could he do something like this, when he was in the same situation as I was? I wouldn't do something like that for someone else, I couldn't afford to.
"Please." He finally said, handing it to me once more. My rebellion failed, and hunger took hold over my willpower. I took the roll and stuffed it in my mouth, quickly consuming the entire thing. The man simply chuckled and ruffled my fur. "Good boy."
D r e a m s wrote:It was dark and silent. Completely silent. I froze, unsure of myself in this place. The cold dampness of the water wasn't underfoot as it usually was, in fact... I couldn't feel the ground at all. I ran aimlessly for some time, bounding and panting as if my life depended upon escape. Something told me to go as fast as I could until my body broke, but I couldn't tell you what it was had you asked.
When I tripped on it, I didn't feel a thing as my face slammed into the ground. I skidded for awhile before glancing back at the object that had tripped me, and a thick black tail snaked out of my vision. I stood, ignorant of the scrapes and abundant bleeding. Fear took hold of me and again I ran for my life.
D r e a m s wrote:This wasn't like the others. The setting was so... real. In comparison to endless darkness and an unwelcoming prison, this pleasant scene of my home seemed so... lighthearted. I almost wanted to cry, because I felt somewhere in my heart that something would happen to ruin this joy for me. With a loud thump my suspicions were confirmed.
I bolted to the kitchen as fast as I could, low and behold it was those two at it again. Dad towered over her, hulking and massive with alcohol on his breath. He chuckled hoarsely, his rugged hair falling up and down with his shaking frame. He'd lost it. The fear in mom's eyes was so obvious it made me shake, and while there was nothing I could do I hadn't the strength to run.
Thump.
Christopher and Toby share a special bond. The two are practically inseparable, and its rare to find one without the other nearby. They live together and have been best friends for quite some time. Toby absolutely adores Chris's happy-go-lucky and enthusiastic personality. He feels like if Chris is happy, then the world is a brighter place. At first he was a bit overwhelmed by Chris's sheer energy and overpowering Christmas spirit, but Toby got used to it pretty quickly. The two love talking about creative writing together, though Chris isn't much for school he still enjoys helping Toby with his english projects. Toby always eats lunch with Chris, no matter how much he wants to sit by himself and seethe after a bad day, because he can always count on Chris to cheer him up.
Lumière is one of Toby's good friends, with her brainy personality and habit of keeping things tidy, she's the perfect type for Toby to hang around. Toby is completely oblivious to her flirty attitude towards girls, and doesn't quite understand why others get so flustered over it. He admires how much she values her appearance, and how well kept and nice she looks at just about any given time. The two met in Intro To Fashion when they were partnered up together. Toby was never very fashionably educated, but working together with Lumi they made the best project in the entire class! After that point Toby started pairing with her during every activity he could and the two really got down to talking and becoming good friends. The two have made quite a few striking fashion projects since becoming friends, and sometimes they refer to one another as 'partners in crime' where fashion is concerned.
Glowstick and Toby met in art class with what started as a convenient seating arrangement. The two really got to talking during class, since most of it was hands-on work that didn't require a shocking amount of concentration. Glowstick's polite and gentle nature really hit it off well with Toby, and the two enjoy chattering together while they work on art projects. Sometimes Toby gets her help on science work, since he loves the subject but isn't very good at it. The two share a passion for both art and science, so it's not hard to see how they became buddies. Glowstick and Toby like getting icecream together, that and playing games during recess. Glowstick is always enthusiastic and ready to go during recess time, so Toby and her generally have a lot of fun playing with everyone! Glowstick is also very creative, something Toby adores, because she can think of a ton of new and interesting games when the old ones get boring.
Vanity gets along with Toby just fine, though she generally pushes people away, and that just intrigues him. Toby is determined to get to know her regardless of how little she may want anything to do with him, and he's commonly spotted going out of his way to do nice things for her. He doesn't understand why she's such a loner, as being on his own for so long he couldn't imagine willingly selecting something like that for himself, but he respects her boundaries when she tells him she needs her space. He keeps a bit of a distance, but hopes to one day get to know his standoffish classmate a bit better and potentially become good friends. Kids in class tend to talk about Vanity, however, as she practices sword art! Toby, for one, thinks this is incredibly cool and hopes to one day see her practice. Overall Vanity fascinates Toby, and she piques his curiosity more than anything else. He wants to understand her and befriend her because he sees a bit of himself in her.
Gabrielle is quite the misfit, but Toby has never really minded that one bit. The two met during recess one day, and Toby felt the need to approach her because of her interesting get up. He thought it was cool that she was dressed like a dinosaur, so he approached her and asked why she was and she told him about her love for archaeology. The two love talking about dinosaurs and other biology things among various other subjects. Toby admires her loyalty towards her friends and feels a strong sense of trust between them. Things might get a bit awkward or strange sometimes because both are a bit socially inexperienced, but again Toby doesn't mind that one bit. The two enjoy playing dinosaurs together and just generally sitting down and talking about whatever comes to mind.
Adabel, or Addie as Toby calls her, is a total baseball nerd. Toby has never really found sports too appealing, but he doesn't mind her extra energy. The two get a bit competitive in recess games and during P.E., one might even say they're rivals! They're not rude or mean to one another, in fact they're both just competitive plumes who also happen to be good sports. Toby is constantly pushing himself to beat Addie and to rival her in any given game despite the odds, and while he certainly doesn't always win (especially not at baseball) he tries his hardest. The two enjoy poking fun at one another playfully and, of course, showing down in only the most epic of team wars during any opportunity. It's not uncommon to see Adabel and Toby each captaining rivaling teams in sports, games or even test review exercises!
Ori and Toby are friends, though Toby doesn't appreciate her stubborn attitude. While most of the time Ori is incredibly fun to be around, she hits moods where she's just downright stuck up. Ori loves being the center of attention, and Toby doesn't particularly like the spotlight. Toby never thought they'd be good friends, or friends at all from what he'd heard. However when he first met Ori in drama class, he found out she was really nice and enjoyable to talk to! The two did quite a bit of stage work together and slowly got to know each other better despite their differences. Sometimes when the school hosts free nights at amusement parks or fun centers, Ori and Toby enjoy a good game of lazer tag, after all what's a good competition between friends? They also enjoy talking over lunch or snack time and playing together during recess.
Ananas, or Nans rather, is such a sweetie how could Toby not get along with xem? Toby finds he has to look out for Nans a bit due to xyr sensitive nature, but Toby doesn't mind. After all he knows that despite xyr desire to avoid conflict, xe would do the same for him if ever he needed it. The two met in music class when Toby was taken aback by Nans's expert playing skills. He caught glimpses of Nans on the streets as well, playing xyr instruments to get a bit of pocket change. Toby saw a bit of himself in Nans, probably because of said street performing, and approached him at school one day. The two hit it off pretty quickly, and while Toby had no idea what Nans was saying when it came to music, he was always willing to listen as Nans explained it to him. Most of the time if Toby hears about Nans planning to go play on the streets, he'll come along just to listen and be there to support his friend.
Guavine is someone Toby wishes he could know better. They have a couple common classes, though because of her shy nature Guava hardly ever speaks up or makes her presence known. She fascinates Toby, and he wants to approach her, though he's almost afraid of what'll happen if he does. He's heard she has a pretty feisty temper when she's flustered or caught off guard. The primary class they share is spanish, in which the two are seated practically right next to each other. Toby is absolutely astounded by Guava's spanish speaking skill and really looks up to her for her knowledge in the subject, though he'd never let anybody know that. He mostly just observes from afar, though one day he hopes to work up the nerve to say something.
Etta is the resident prankster at school, though Toby is rather fond of her. Toby finds it hard to truly hate anyone, and most of the time he's especially pleasant until given reason not to be. While Etta stirs up a bit of trouble here and there, the way Toby sees it she's not hurting anyone and it's all in innocent fun. He's noticed her fiery attitude as it comes out quite a bit when playing on the playground or in the gym, and much like Addie the two tend to face off in various forms of showdowns. Etta may not know it, but Toby wants to be her friend, and he's very determined in his pursuit. Most kids at school steer clear of Etta just because of how much of a troublemaker she can be, but Toby knows better than to do something like that. After all, he's no hypocrite. Toby wants to get to know Etta better some day, and potentially figure out why she causes all the mischief she does.
