Oh god she's sososo pretty owo
Username: Shadowhunter,
Equid's Name: Astrid. Her show name is Starlight Sonata
Age: 2
Height: 12.1hh
Sex: Mare
Gender: female
Personality: Astrid is an odd mare as she never whinnies or neighs, she makes no sound. This is a result of her being born deaf: she has never heard another equid make noise and therefore doesn't know what noises she should be making, in fact she doesn't even know she's supposed to make noises. She has also never learnt how to properly communicate with others and just stares at them with her head tilted sideways, confused with what they're trying to do. The other equine ends up with frustrated or creeped out by her staring and end up stalking away. They spread rumors about Astrid and even though she can't hear them talking, she can
feel their animosity and shies away from them.
Astrid has had bad experiences with others, not just equines, but humans too. She was born on a ranch that bred purely for looks, not genetics. Her sire was healthy, but her dam...not so much. She was already weak before she was pregnant, but her coloration was beautiful and that's all that mattered. As the mare came closer and closer to her due date, she became weaker as all her energy was put into keeping Astrid healthy. Astrid ended up being premature-and deaf as a result. Her dam died shortly after Astrid's birth and even though she doesn't understand why, Astrid always feels guilty about her mom's death and has nightmares of the day she woke up to see her dam glassy-eyed and cold.
As soon as Astrid was old enough, she was turned out with the other foals. They didn't mind her at first, but it soon became clear that Astrid was the owner's favourite because of her unique coat. Astrid didn't like the extra attention though because it meant lots of poking, prodding, and getting looked at like an object, not a sentient being. It also meant the the foals in the field would despise her because of the extra attention she got. They soon discovered that she is deaf and how they tortured her. Sneaking up behind her then biting at her face, opening the door to her stall and throwing worms, beetles, and even a live snake. When she was old enough to begin training, the owners put her through grueling training sessions everyday. When she was tired, they'd whip her on the sensitive skin of her belly or between her legs where the scars wouldn't show. As soon they tried to train her to follow commands, they learnt of her deafness. She was beat up and let go. As a result, she doesn't trust anyone and prefers to keep to herself. She constantly checks behind her out of the fear something is there and coming to get her.
Astrid isn't aware of different personalities or that she even has one. To her, she's acting in a way that gives her the best chance of survival. She ran from the frist barn and lived in the wild for months. The wild is a brutal place for a deaf equid and Astrid figured that out very quickly. Just because she's not book smart doesn't mean she's dumb; in fact she's quite intelligent. She learns by observation and trial and error. During her months in the wild, she learnt that the wolves had certain feeding times so she should avoid coming near them when they're out hunting. She also learnt (after a few close calls) that predators would stand downwind from her so she wouldn't be able to smell them until too late. She trusts her gut instinct and whenever she feels even the slightest hint of danger, she flees. The wild wasn't kind to her, and in the end, she ended up at another barn, this one much kinder to her than her first home. However, if the barn gets too dangerous, she will leave. Or so she thinks...
The humans at the barn see Astrid's personality much differently than she sees it. Most can't see her intelligence, however some notice how she seems to be able to tell the personality of others by looking at them/smelling them, how she avoids rotten apples (while other horses eat them then get sick), how she can open the lock on her stall door-the signs are there if you choose to see them.
Astrid doesn't realize what a handful she can be, but the humans at the barn generally become exasperated by her antics. She refuses to have a halter and lead on while she's being groomed or getting a bath. She find them confining and annoying (however she'll tolerate them at a show) and she takes it a sign of distrust. Astrid won't eat unless her trainer (and the only human who will put up with her) feeds her. If anyone else tries, she'll think they're trying to poison/hurt her. She can also be hypocritical as she expects others to do things, but she doesn't do them herself. She also seems like a bit of a drama Queen-she tends to make a big deal out of nothing. For example, the farm owner's truck sprayed her with water when she was being walked, and she reared, bucked, and glared with her ears flattened. She would not calm down for hours and she prances nervously around the truck even months later.
She needs an insanely patient person to train her as she can be paranoid about her surroundings. Being deaf, she can't hear the ambient noise or if something is coming for her, so she constantly checks the area around her. First, the trainer would have to walk with her around the arena (has to stay with her, otherwise she freaks out because she turns around and no one's there) not only once, but multiple times. She also has to pause during training to sniff and look around just to double check that there's no danger. Despite all this, Astrid is a natural at showing and has won may ribbons, however, getting her to the show ring is a challenge on its own. They have to get there early so Astrid can checkout the arena and make sure it's safe. Then they have to warm her up and take her for a walk around the outside of the arena so she can observe the people. After that, she's fine for the show save for the occasional sniff or glance behind her.
Astrid has many quirks and fears, but there are a few notable ones. Her main quirk is she'll never walk into her stall, an arena or a new place without checking it out first and making sure it's safe. This is a result of finding bugs and snakes in her stall when she was a foal. She tends to be nervous around water because she was sprayed with it by a truck once (it was terrifying for her) and she almost drowned in a stream once. Astrid is terrified that something I'd going to sneak up on her and either eat her or kidnap her. She constantly checks behind her because of this. Other minor fears include drowning, getting kidnapped, losing her home to a fire, dandelions (she ate one that had a bee in it and she thinks it was the flower that stung her x3), trucks, and people with glasses (the owners at her previous home wore glasses so she associates them with the pain she felt there).
Astrid wakes up every day feeling like something is missing (she doesn't understand that she's deaf). She notices how other equines perk their ears when the truck comes up the driveway, and she also notices how they all start at the sound of thunder (whereas she can just feel the vibrations from it and she's curious about its source, but she's not scared of it). She thinks this behavior is weird and the other equines think her behavior is weird because she doesn't start at loud noises. Even though Astrid can be quite a handful sometimes, she truly loves the people and equines she lives with (she'll never admit it though).
Descriptive Piece: A cool wind ruffles your hair and stirs your soul, wakening your senses until all you feel is the wind and all you can see is the vast sky turning to night. You breathe in, smelling the familiar scent of rain on the horizon and a hint of ripe fruit from a nearby apple tree. The tree is quite far away and the sun back lights it, shadowing the front so it looks like a silhouette against a darkening background. The sky is a magnificent tangerine hue where the sun lays, suspended by an invisible force. As its light radiates out, the tangerine fades to a deep royal blue then the sky falls to blackness and hints of light start to wink into existence. Rainclouds litter the sky, lit up by the sun. Those closest to the sinking star are an orange so vivid, it seems surreal, like a painting. Those further away are softly tinged with shades of rose and violet, yet they look striking against the deep blue of the shadowing sky. More stars start to whisper into existence as the sky deepens, scattering their pure light into space. The raincloud that blocked the moon suddenly drifts across it. The moon, freed from the cloud, shines its silvery light onto the world below. The clouds become splashed with silver; the grass and apple tree bask in this night sun. The rain you had smelt earlier comes down now, not gradually but all at once, drenching you instantly. Quicksilver moonbeams bound off the water droplets and shattered light falls everywhere, chasing itself and the shadows. You decide it looks like the stars are falling and you smile in wonder. The droplets subside and you notice the sun has set completely; the shadows had chased the light and the stars and moon burn fervently in an inky darkness. Small lights flicker with the graceful stars, tiny, hopeful lights known as fireflies. The wind changes form cool to warm and lulling and you suddenly feel sleepy. You curl up under the blanket of the dark, silent sky and fall asleep with the stars watching over you, a content smile playing over your lips as you drift off to sleep while the moon sails silently overhead.
Happy Story:I've been waiting for a story to put here, but as I'm not at home, not much has really happened. Except for what just happened rn xD
I'm staying with my aunt and uncle, and the have a cattle dog mix named
Spencer. He's a very sweet and mellow dog, never growls and is very patient and adorable. My aunt brought out
christmas crackers which always contain coloured paper crowns. Spencer always sits and stares at whoever has food, and he was staring at my mom. That was the perfect chance for my sister to slip a crown over his head (as it wouldn't stay on top). And he looked
so hilarious, we all burst out laughing xD Being the sweet dog he is, Spencer didn't fuss and it stayed on until he ripped it by yawning x3
