Answer: They both share a passion for the world around them. The antics of Sequoia fascinate Ruben. The way she keeps her lady like appearance, yet she's happy to run through the swamps and roll around in the mud with the youngsters seems odd to him. Sequoia and Ruben both love exploring the grooves in the different species of evergreen and deciduous trees. Ruben and Sequoia even have their little competitions where they name the trees and plants as they pass them, Sequoia always beats Ruben to it, but he secretly envies her extensive knowledge of the world around her.

Ruben is a keen stargazer, so he can always have the edge when they have their slightly nerdy conversations about constellations and the galaxies. Ruben feels like he can really reflect on his life when he's around Sequoia and that she helps him with minor or major dilemmas he may face. Because they're so similar in personality, Ruben can express his admiration or dislike for certain subjects and they'll query or discuss it, only rarely do they have opposite views and heated disagreements. The one of a few differences between the pair, is that Ruben is less strong-willed than Sequoia. She has the determination to accomplish anything, but Ruben has shallow self-esteem, which Sequoia helps him with. So... How did he meet Sequoia?

A low breeze swept through the rocky valley, as Ruben raised his head and looked around in awe at the beauty of the scene around him. Galloping and throwing his head back, letting loose a little whinny, Ruben snorted and haulted abruptly at the outskirts of a cave. Inside, an echoing dripping noise was emitted, accompanied by a few scuffling noises. Advancing into the cave, Ruben swished his tail curiously. The figure turned to face him, revealing a mare of a similar build. They studied each other quietly, an intense stand-off had begun. After minutes, the uncomfortable air in the atmosphere increased. Eventually, both spoke, revealing their names in unison. With a startled attitude, Ruben twitched his nose and stepped backwards quietly. "What are you doing?" He asked, eyes adjusting to the dim lighting of the cave. After a couple of minutes, the mare picked up the fossil in her mouth and smiled, "fossil excavating," she explained, muffling her words through the chalky remains of the stone. Stepping to the left, she revealed a large fossil unknown to Ruben. "That's so cool!" He said, observing the masterpiece closer. "You must teach me!" He said, hooves struggling to stay grounded in excitement. Hours later, a beautiful fossil lay at Ruben's hooves. Fossils later, they both realised there equal passion for nature, which lead to a beautiful friendship.

The thing is, I don't really know how I became friends with Amalya. One day I was alone and the next I wasn't. She was visiting her grandmother Kalilah, and I happened to be in the area. Her laugh was infectious and I've never really been one to smile or join a joke but she somehow seemed to have me in a good mood instantly. As we grew closer I began to realise just how amazing my new friend was, she was quiet like me but when we were together we would laugh and just forget about the rest of the world, about how we were perceived and how we were expected to act. We would gallop around with the wind in our manes, teasing and tormenting any equids that were unfortunate enough to get in our way. Yet as soon as she left I was back in that hollow shell I called myself, not even a smile graced my features until Amalya was back by my side. Many days went by when we were apart, minutes turned to hours and hours turned to what seemed like centuries, I never had such fun as when I was with her, no one could compare and I didn't want them too. She helped me become someone I never thought I could, I was confident and adventurous instead of my usual pessimistic and dejected self. Amalya was the reason that so many things happened to me, so many things that would forever stay in my head. To put it simply she was someone I couldn't live without, I physically needed her in my life just so I could stay afloat, I depended on her with every being and soul that I had, every brain and heart cell called out for her when she left. It was her blood that flowed through my veins, her voice in my head telling me that I could do whatever it was that I thought I couldn't, her heart beating in my chest as I traipsed across mountains just to get back to her side. The thought of being without her sent a crippling pain all around my body, it was as if my heart itself couldn't bare the thought or feeling of not having her around, I needed her to bring me out of the shell I hid behind, I needed her to show me that for just a few hours everything would always be okay, I need her just like she needed me. We were each others saviours, each others scapegoats and each others drug. Both of us addicted to the adrenaline and excitement that coursed through our veins when we galloped through the grass, jumped across rivers and climbed mountains that simply blocked our path, addicted to the affection we felt for each other and the knowing that, deep down, we both hid behind the same shell. Without Amayla I am nothing, but with her, I feel like im worth even more than the world.

I remember the first time we met. She was beautiful, my guardian angel. She was the wind in my mane and the sea spray on my neck. The sun formed a halo around her as she stared down at me on the forest floor, and she opened her perfect lips to speak.
"Get up, idiot."
She promptly shook off her soaking wet pelt and began to walk away without a glance back, and I was too stunned to be incensed. She…saved me?
It happened again. ‘Give a dog a bad name and hang him’, fully applies to me. My name is Whippoorwill, although I insist on being called Will. I am a (so I like to think) rather masculine stallion, but as a little equid I was very shy, and was always picked upon for my 'sissy name'. This time, a bunch of the older ones had decided to see if the little girly bird could swim. Of course, I couldn't, but I kept my mouth shut as they approached me, jeering.
But this time was different. This time, one of the stupider ones figured it would be highly amusing to push me into the river and get rid of their ‘loser problem’ once and for all. I think they didn’t really mean to kill me, but the doubt stays with me even now. Either way, if it weren’t for Venus, they would have. I became filled with fear and misery, and adrenaline throbbed in my veins.
“Why can’t you just leave me alone?” I screamed.
“Because you’re a big loser baby!” This was a dumb response but it worked for them. Sans warning, the biggest black foal crashed into me, sending me into the abyss.
I flailed desperately, my lungs screaming for air, and water surged around me. My heart screamed for life, but a little portion of me whispered, hey, just let the water take you… I slowed. No more bullies, no more pain….
I had no time to understand what happened next. One moment, I was in the gentle arms of death, the next, searing light of the sun, and before me she stood. She had saved me. Then walked away.
In my heart something ticked. She was so incredible, although I’d known her only seconds. Obviously not part of the in crowd or she wouldn’t have thought twice about saving me. I’d seen her around briefly before; Venus. A wild thing, she could have beaten all the others down and became their leader, if she wanted; yet she chose to save me.
I sighed, and pulled myself up to walk away, but just as my heart sighed dramatically and offered the phrase ‘the one that got away’ my hell-bent angel turned, looking at me with amusement and a little bit of disgust.
“Well, aren’t you coming?”
I followed.
