Story: His name was not always Anomie. At an earlier point in time, he was Halcyon, a physical reminder of the pleasant spring afternoon in which he had entered the world. The mares of his herd fawned over his ideal demeanor: curious without channeling rebellion. His mother gave him love like no other in the world: protective without the overbearing weight of suffocation. Even his father, regardless of the fact his son bore little to no resemblance to him, was overwhelmed by how perfect this foal was. Halcyon was to make a fine leader someday, his destiny practically written in the stars. But so happy was the herd, they blinded themselves to an unfortunate spear of envy. Her name was Aspen, and her own foal had mysteriously passed away just days before Halcyon joined the herd. Ever since, she had been plotting.
As such, nearly a week after Halcyon was born, Aspen found herself ready to act. The night was still young, but fatigue from a day of traveling had the herd asleep within minutes. If all worked out well, it would take but some gentle prodding and delicate footsteps- maybe, just maybe, a nip or two- and Halcyon would be hers. But naturally, the foal’s dam woke up, and the two mares furiously fought for motherhood. In the end, Aspen’s agony catapulted her into the metaphoric winner’s circle, and she took Halcyon far from the herd they had once considered family. The tragic cries of the foal almost drove Aspen back, pity blooming in her broken heart. But the shame of returning, coupled with the sensation of quenched fury, immediately trashed the idea.
Almost two days later, Aspen was brought to a new herd courtesy of a large black stallion. He failed to understand the wonder that had previously surrounded Halcyon, and on several attempts tried to abandon him. However, despite Aspen’s triumphs in keeping “her” son, the others mares of the herd followed their stallion’s example and their own instincts, isolating the newest members. Still in shock from his abrupt separation from his real mother, Halcyon quickly grew to understand he was not a real member of this herd. He was an outcast, expected to walk through the motions of belonging but never truly earning acceptance. And these equids, they were so different! It seemed impossible for the young foal to ever embody “halcyon” again...So he embraced his new role in life. He understood his real place in this world. He was, and remains, Anomie.
