Training day 3
Target wakes me up with a howl that I correctly interpret as a cry for food. "Do you have to be so loud?" I grumble to myself as I roll out of bed. I dress quickly, and run into the kitchen to prepare a breakfast for both of us. I make myself some waffles and smear them with jam. When I finish, I run outside to give Target her breakfast of boiled chicken, like always. After a few days of teaching her how to be comfortable in her head collar, it was time to introduce to her saddle and saddle blanket I ordered just for her. They were customized to her body, and I hoped that she would like it. She had taken to the head collar so easily, that I had started to think she would be this easy with everything else. I was so wrong.
When she first saw the saddle and the blanket, she looked up from her meal, and whined, knowing what was coming next. After going through the head collar, I knew that going for her directly wouldn't work. So I groom her a bit, making her coat, mane and tail silky soft. Once I'm through, I pick up the heavy blanket. I move slowly towards the Echobi, trying not to make her panic. When I get to her side, I sit on her, and put the saddle blanket over her. I slip off, worried that she would start running around. When she doesn't move, I get the saddle, and go to her side. The instant she feels the saddle on her back, she takes off. I look around at her, and try to find the saddle and the blanket. Both are easy to spot, as the blanket is black, while the saddle is purple. Both are lying on the ground not too far from each other. I go into the house, leaving the saddle and the blanket behind. I sigh to myself, as I prepare the rack of lamb that is Target's favorite treat.
When I step outside with the lamb, I see Target with the saddle in her mouth, lying on the blanket. It appears that she was trying to rip the saddle apart. Not again, I think. I am preparing for my struggle with Target, when I look at my watch. It is almost evening! I have skipped lunch while dilly-dallying trying to get the blanket and saddle onto my Echobi. I wave the rack of lamb, trying to waft the scents to Target. It works, and I see Target sniffing the air for the treat. I put the plate down, and start running towards her. She is caught by surprise, and I rip the saddle out of her mouth, before she comes to her senses and scrambles up. I move out of the way, and grab the blanket. As Target puts her muzzle down to lick the tasty morsel, I throw the black blanket over her, and start fastening the saddle. The drama is over in minutes, with the lamb on the grass, and poor Target whining and barking as she attempts to pull the heavy saddle off. Once she finally stops barking, I feel some pain in my right shoulder. I look there, and find that I cut it, as well as pulled a muscle. You aren't going nothing for a while, I think to myself. I head into the house, and open the freezer, hoping to find an ice pack. I shiver as I put it onto my shoulder, as even though the ice is wrapped, that didn't diminish its effectiveness. I sigh with relief, and look outside. Target is lying down, with a look that appears to say, How could you? I had become fairly good at telling what Target was thinking, but that still didn't make me a mind reader. Of course, how was I supposed to know that today was going to be so stressful...
Target has now been introduced to her saddle and her saddle blanket
Her saddle is purple, and her saddle blanket is black.

amazingly! I have co-authored a paper on
them, which is very exciting. In other
news, I'm a lil' nervous about the future
again but I'm hopeful things will work out.
