The Light in the Night:
Rook was born a bit differently than his other siblings. All of them were born in cave known as home, in darkness that streched through every crevice. Rook, however, was accidently born outside straight into the rays of sunlight. The first thing he saw was light. It embraced him as he rose to his feet and started at its awesome illumination. Due to his dark colors and how they shined in the sun his mother named him Rook, for ravens black feathers shine in light. Then, his mother brought him to the cave. At first the darkness did not faze him, for he just had to turn his little neck around to see the dazzling bright stream outside once more. It was when the sky outside starting to turn red that Rook started to shake. He started to wail loudly as the Sun fell below the horizon. Once all light was gone, all he saw was black. His mother tried to calm him, telling him that he would be able to see once his eyes adjusted. Slowly he began to squint his new eyes back open, but he could see nothing but darkness. He heard his dad complain about how much trouble Rook was. So Rook silenced. He said that he could see and tried to fall asleep, but the darkness kept him from dozing.
For the first weeks of his life, Rook's days passed the same. Pretend to wake up, go play with siblings, eat food, take an extra long nap, and then pretend to fall asleep. Even as he got older, his eyes never did adjust, and this caused him to be curious about why? His family all could do it, so why couldn't he? At first, he thought, maybe it was because of his condition that mom called YFS C. No one else in the family had that sickness, but being young forever should not effect something that his siblings could do as babies. For awhile Rook was stumbled, until he came upon a pond while exploring with his sister Vioula. When Rook gazed into the water he noticed something different about him. His eyes were green. No one in his family had light eyes, all of them having black or red, so why were his different? It was not long after that he learned he not only had YFS C, but a condition that kept his eyes from adjusting. Every night he would have to be tortured with sightlessness just because of his special eyes. At least, that was until one night.
One day Vioula, Rook's sister, wanted to go on an adventure through the fields. Rook agreed, since he hated making people upset, and the two traveled for hours until a redness filled the sky. Rook looked foreward as the sun began sinking into the earth's flat horizon. He tried to get Vioula to head home, but she insisted that they find that field for a certain surprise. As the darkness fell upon the land, the two came to the tall grass of the field. Rook could barely see over the height of the grass, but the light of the moon let him see as Vioula stood in awe of something just above his view. He ran up to her and climbed onto her back carefully to take in the view. The view that appeared in his green eyes was magical. All around flew little creatures that seemed only consistant of light particles. They would flash on and off, as if keeping beat to a song only in their heads. As he sat on Violua on landed on his nose and he chuckled. The light allowed him to see, even within the darkness of night. Rook puffed a small fire, and the firely started to follow him as he ran through the field. As they headed home, Rook made sure his new little friend knew just where to follow, in the right range where Rook could see through the dark.
