"Arbeit macht frei."[1]
They told me this daily, and I was so foolish enough as to believe it. My mutti, Esther[2], told me never to trust the German soldiers. She said that Adolf Hitler was a bad man, that he was blaming our country's problems on us[3].
But I had been so reckless. I didn't heed her warning, and when the German soldiers saw the stars[4] stitched onto mein and mein mutti's shoulders, they whisked us away to a work camp.
Auschwitz.[5]
1 - translations: Arbeit macht frei; German for "Work will set you free."
mein mutti; my mother
2 - One of the most popular Jewish names at the time. Means "hiddenness" in Hebrew.
3 - Derived from class teachings. After the loss of WW1, Germany was in a deep economic slump, which led to, after a course of about two years, Adolf Hitler rising to power.
4 - As explained in the first post, this is the Star of David. During the Holocaust, this symbol was turned into that of shame, and all Jews were forced to wear it.
5 - One of the most popular German Concentration Camps. A little over 271,000 Jews were killed there.
