Fact about opossums:
Opossums don't play dead on purpose. It is an involuntary instinct that occurs when the opossum feel threatened. The opossum isn't even conscious of the fact they are playing dead. When an opossum plays dead, he often closes his eyes, sticks out his tongue, becomes stiff, and even mimics the smell of a dead animal by releasing a fluid from the anal glands. The opossum doesn't return to consciousness until 40 minutes- 4 hours later.
Favorite thing about himself:
Totoro can take the most worn out, bent up things that he finds most anywhere and turn them into amazing items that maybe people would covet. Totoro doesn't make these items to show off his wonderful talent, but he does it for himself and mostly for his friends. Sometimes, he will scavenge about the woods or the junkyard, looking for tossed away items with great potential.

Totoro trotted somberly along the well-trodden path in the woods. The smell of the newly bloomed trees and the creek water moving through the air lifted his spirits, but only by a little bit. For some reason, the bean had been feeling down in the dumps lately. Despite the fact that many of his friends still loved his creations, Totoro felt that his “magical” touchups on almost unusable items were failing miserably. There was almost no inspiration in what he created, and the new item was almost the same as the old piece of crap he was trying to transform. As Totoro trudged along the path, these thoughts weighed on his shoulders heavily, making him feel worse and worse. Suddenly, a rat like creature with a pelt much like Totoro’s scurried in front of him, making Totoro screech to halt.
“What are you doing, little creature?” Totoro asked the creature, taking a few cautionary steps backward. The rat-like thing, which Totoro thought was an opossum, just stared back at Totoro. For a moment, Totoro and the opossum just stared at each other, the same emotions stirring within their eyes. But, as the bean took a step toward the opossum, the marsupial hissed
loudly and dropped to the ground, growing stiff.
“Oh my gosh!” Totoro yelped, a horrified look crossing his face as he trotted to the opossum. He picked up a stick, poking the opossum tentatively with the stick. After a few pokes, Totoro had concluded he had killed the mammal. He killed it. He killed the cute- well maybe not as cute as bunny- opossum. Totoro groaned slumping against a nearby tree. This day was not turning out well. His hopes of feeling happier died with the opossum.
“Toto!” Totoro heard in the distance. He recognized the voice, and whipped around, smiling as he did so. It was Lillian, his friend. He trotted toward her happily. Maybe she would be able to make him smile. She always had been able to in the past.
“Watcha doing?” Lily asked, panting a bit.
Totoro shrugged, “Nothing really..”
Lily looked at him for a little, sensing something was off about him. “What’s wrong?”
He started to shrug again, but stopped. He could never lie to her. “I don’t know..I just haven’t really been able to make my wonderful creations like I always have been lately. It’s like I’ve lost my touch. Everything I try to transform just becomes even more like trash than it was before.”
Lily pursed her lips, thinking. “Well, I’m sure there’s something we can do about that!” She exclaimed, grabbing him and dragging him toward the pathway. She picked up something that Totoro had been working on earlier and handed it to him. “Just…play around with it and see what you can do!”
Totoro frowned, but took the small item. It was so worn down and beat up that Totoro wasn’t exactly sure what it was. Nevertheless, he still fiddled with it, trying to figure out what could make it brand new and functional. Lily watched as he pulled tools out of his bag, her eyes wide with fascination. After a while, he dropped his tools and the item.
“I can’t do it!” He yelled in frustration, huffing loudly.
Lily picked up the item again, examining it carefully. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Toto.”
Totoro stared at her steadily, then dropped his gaze to her item in her paw. “What do you mean?”
“I mean I have no idea what you’re talking about when you say you’ve lost your touch! I see so much potential in this. If you just tweak with it so more, it could be almost anything you want!”
Totoro smiled, nodded, and then took the item from her hand, placing it into his pouch, “I’ll work on it later..just not now,”
Lily grinned and hugged him. “Do you feel better now?”
He nodded and smiled again. “Much better”
“Okay, then let’s go play in the creek!”
Totoro ran after Lily as she dashed further into the woods toward the nearby creek. As he passed the pathway, he saw the once dead opossum alive and walking around. Just like the opossum, Totoro's hopes were alive again, soaring high above his head in the blue sky.
