Name of Shionnix:
Achaikos
The Greek name Αχαικος (Achaikos) refers to a region in Greece called Αχαια (Achaia), situated on the northern coast of the Peloponnese. In the New Testament this is the name of a Corinthian Christian who aids Saint Paul.
It's a name of power and nobility, a I though that it fit this Shionnix very well.
Goes by "Ikos" for short.
Personality:
At one time, Ikos had been a brave and valiant leader. His pack had looked up at him like his was a god, though he was too humble for such notions. But that Shionnix was from a long, long time ago.
Now he's stubborn and antisocial; Ikos was born into leadership and did perfectly, but after the fire he didn't want to accept the responsibility anymore. Ikos has a very "grounded" personality; he's never been one to dream or have high hopes. Actually, come to think of it, Ikos has never even had a goal in life. He's a gorgeous Shionnix and well sought after as a mate, but suffers greatly in the personality department. He lacks motivation to improve himself, and only half-heartedly hunts. Half the time he goes hungry just because he doesn't want to do anything. He suffers from severe depression, but no one knows why; he won't let anyone close enough to find out.
Story:
This wasn't happening.
Eyes wide as he took in the sigh before him, Ikos gave a loud growl as the fire reflected in his crystal blue eyes, the flame spreading from treetop to treetop. His wings beat evenly, the vibrant Shionnix hovering in place. How did this happen? Suddenly there was two small chirps to his right, and he immediately turned to look; two pups were screaming in their nest, the fire coming closer and closer to lighting the twigs that had once kept them safe.... Growling, he gave one strong pulse of his wings and leaned forward, diving the short distance to where the pups rested.
Frightened, the two young ones shrunk back, not realizing that this was their alpha. Eyeing the flames that were licking at the back of the nest, Ikos began to preen comfortingly. "It's alright, I'm here to help," she said softly. "Get you away from the nasty fire." After a few moments of urging them to come forward, he quickly grabbed the pups, the weaker, smaller pup held in his mouth and the older pup biting on to his neck to stay on. One powerful wing beat and Ikos took off, away from the fire as it engulfed the pup's den. Turning quickly, he found that the only way out of the chasm was lined with fire on either side. There was no other way out; he's have to risk it.
Tucking his wings to gain speed, Ikos dove for an opening in the burning plague, beating his wings only to propel himself forward, The fire was hot, the red tendrils licking at his wings and tailfeathers. The intense light matched his luminescent markings, and his determined eyes stood out brilliantly against the heated tones. There was the cavern opening, he was almost there....
With a sound similar to the roar of a dragon, Ikos managed to just barely miss being hit by a falling limb, the massive hunk of wood plummeting to the earth. The backdraft it caused, though, managed to hit Ikos full force and make him falter; at the sudden lurching stop, the pup on Ikos' back lost his grip and fell. The alpha gave a silent yell and tried to reach for him, but it was too late. The pup was gone.
A searing pain erupted in his chest at the loss; he had failed that pup, and it had died by one of the Shionnix's greatest enemies.
And it was his fault.
Fighting back tears, Ikos turned back for the cave entrance and made a break for it. Tucking his wings and the remaining pup close to his chest, Ikos left the tunnel right as burning wood sealed the entrance shut. His pack's home was gone, and would be for a long time, he was afraid. As he hit open skies, Ikos managed to level his flight and slow down. He nudged the pup onto his back and flew carefully; he wouldn't drop this one. It was a long, sorrowful flight back, but eventually he caught up to his back. He watched sadly as the pup managed to bounce over to his mother. Thankfully, there was no need to tell her what had happened; she already knew.
Turning away he found his second in command. "You're alpha now," he said quietly. "I don't know where I'm going or how long I'll be gone, so this is your pack now. Treat them well," he said simply before he took off. It took some time for his vibrant color to succumb to the night's embrace, but when it did, the new alpha knew he wasn't coming back.
