Say hello to Garth, a prized show rat who is very passionate about his work and has a taste for the finer things. His life is perfectly balanced between getting ready for the next big event and enjoying himself with plenty of downtime, because after all the effort of showing it's important to have a break! Usually his preparation routine will begin a few days before the show, where he gets his coat carefully trimmed and washed to look as luxurious as possible. He loves the water and the soft floral scents of his shampoo; it's incredibly relaxing. Since he always feels pampered and sleepy after bath time, he usually takes a cozy rat nap for a few hours next. His favorite place to rest is in his owner's lap while they read. There's frequently a cup of tea nearby and the smell of chamomile is one of the best experiences ever, in his opinion. Once he's a bit perkier he and his owner go through his items to make sure he's packed for the show. The most important item in his belongings is his tiny teddy bear, Frederick! It can be hectic in the middle of a show with so many people and other rodents around, but as long as he can cuddle Frederick it doesn't seem so bad. The days leading up to the show are filled with excitement as he practices his tricks a few more times and watches his owner fill up the car. By the morning they leave he's usually running in little circles and brightly squeaking his enthusiasm. The drive there is boring, but when they finally arrive, the show is such an event every time he can't help but get caught up in it all. He gets to meet so many nice people, who often give him pets and compliments, and he gets to catch up with some of the other rats he's befriended at other shows. Regardless of whether he wins or loses he always enjoys himself and can't wait until the next time he gets to go. It helps that the following day is spent in leisure as well, giving him plenty of time to unwind so there's never too much pressure. If he had to pick his favorite show? It would probably be the time he entered a costume competition and got to dress up as a pirate! Everyone was having so much fun in their outfits, he counts it as one of his best memories and hopes he can participate again soon.

There once was a rat with curls of fur,
Who could move so fast,
It was like a blur!
He wanted to explore the world so vast,
It's beautiful lights, it's wondrous past,
The way the light went out at night,
How sun would shine outside so bright.

He remembered as a pinky,
A place damp and stinky,
With other rats like him,
Searching for a home.
A cage small and tight,
It felt so very grim,
No place to roam,
Barely a home.

But then came the humans!
Their faces full of cheer,
But so big and scary,
All he felt was fear.
But lucky for him, (And for his friends!)
He had no real reason to be wary.

They took him to a vast hutch,
With plentiful food,
And heart swelled with gratitude,
He looked out.

What was this place? Was this the wild?
A thought came to mind, and oh how he smiled!
If he wanted to explore,
Then just say no more!
Simply wait, and escape out the cage door.

Story:
Anyone who met Ophelia mightve considered her quite... strange. She lived in a quaint little home, her elderly owner as blind as a bat but sharper than a tack. Ophelia was welcome to wander the garden and home as she wished. Whether she was curled up by the fireplace, or prancing in the garden, she always made sure to humble herself. You see, those who considered her strange, she thought of as quite strange herself.
Bred amongst snooty show rats and elderly broods, she always promised herself to be as kind as possible. And so she was. She spent her days doing the most she could. Herbs for her lovely owner from the garden, as the poor woman's knees were far too frail to be kneeling in the course dirt. Grass for the nearby cattle and horses, who loved telling her stories of great adventure and wisdom. And the last spring, she was able to meet the newborn calves, that nuzzled and prodded her curiously.
This life she loved to live and lived to love.
Nowadays she was about two. A bit old for her kind but she felt none the worse than she did as a mere pup. Her old owner had sadly passed, but the womans youngest daughter had taken in both the home and ophelia quite happily.

The Great Unknown
" Oh-Pheliaaaa! " an elderly voice sang from within the home. Ophelia had simply been sitting outside, enjoying the afternoon sun and soft breeze. At the sound of her owners croaking voice, she scurried inside happily. Noticing the old woman sitting in her old creaky chair, Ophelia hopped up carefully and pattered her small feet against the womans arm as a welcome. The woman broke out into a wrinkly smile and gently grabbed her.
" Why I havent seen you in quite some time, but Im quite sure youre just as pretty as you used to be. Soft curly fur and tickly whiskers just like I last saw, " she said, fawning over Ophelia softly.
" Now now. I need to go to the shop. I know you cant understand but Id like to think somewhere in there you know. Ill be back dear. " She set Ophelia down carefully and creaked to a stand. Ophelia huffed.
Oh how she hated when Madam went to the shop. She always took far too long and came back smelling of too many fruits and vegetables and cleaning products. However, her biggest concern was making sure the old woman was ok. Ophelia knew she was frail.Helpless so to speak. She didnt want poor Madam getting frightened or lost.

And so she did what any sneaky little rat would do, and climbed straight into her purse. Only halfway down their street did she realize this must be an awful idea. She peeked over the side of the bag now and then, but spent the majority of her time cuddling in a large pocket within. Despite her fears, the journey was honestly quite uneventful. The smells were awfully overwhelming, as well as the sounds of loud men, women, and children. She found the store was so posh and clean it almost made her feel dirty.
Although she knew that just didnt make sense. She waited patiently, and all went well until she was spotted by a child in a shopping trolly. The child gasped and yelled and pointed and soon her Madam was well aware she was there.
Ophelia hid in her shame, hating to hear her owner apologize so profously. She quickly grabbed her things and made her way out, scolding Ophelia half heartedly under her breath.
However, Ophelia knew she wasnt mad. Her soft smile gave that away quite clearly. She wasnt sure why, but she felt the old woman had appreciated her a little more starting that day. Oh what a day.
