Panda Fact: like kitsu said, it's semi-commonly known that pandas are classified as carnivorans yet are primarily herbivorous, but they also have pretty conflicting differences because of this! their digestive system remains more well-suited for that of "true" carnivores and is considered unusual for an animal that eats only plants, along with them still having carnivore-specific genes so they don't really get much from eating bamboo. although, they've still had physical adaptations to their diet! their molars are unlike that of most bears and their teeth overall have a reduced 'slicing' capacity a carnivore would need and in comparison to most other carnivores

Panda Fact: the panda’s scientific name is ailuropoda melanoleuca, which means “black and white cat-foot”. it was debated for decades whether the giant panda was part of the ursidae family as they share characteristics with both bears and raccoons. studies eventually showed that the giant panda is a true member of the bear family, splitting off from the common ancestor of the ursidae family about nineteen million years ago! there are two subspecies of panda - the most well known black-and-white pandas, and the less common qinling panda, which is brown and white, and found only in the qinling mountains in shaanxi, which gives them their name. they are also smaller and larger molars!

Panda Fact: The China Conservation and Research Center has a linguistics project dedicated to pandas! While baby pandas don't volcaize as much as adolescents or adults, they've identified three similar sounds they all make; a "gee-gee" sound when hungry, "wow-wow" when unhappy, and a "coo-coo" when they're excited or happy. They learn to express themselves in other ways as they get older, but that's pretty dang cute if you ask me!

Panda Fact: Did you know that there's actually another subspecies of giant panda? We're all very familiar with the black and white panda, but in the 1960s, a subspecies was discovered. The Qinling panda was recognized as a subspecies in 2005. They're almost the same as a regular giant panda, except for two little differences... they're brown and white instead of black and white, and they've got smaller skulls!

Panda Fact: Baby pandas are born pink (furless) and measure about 15cm. They are also born blind and only open their eyes six to eight weeks after birth. The iconic black and white colour comes later, after about three weeks.

Panda Fact: "There is an ancient legend which tells of the fact that pandas were once all white. The story goes that one day, a panda was being attacked by a leopard. A girl came to the panda’s aid and sadly the leopard instead killed the girl. White pandas were said to have gone to the girl’s funeral and had black armbands made from ashes. As the pandas hugged each other and cried, the black ashes smudged, resulting in the black markings that are now commonly associated with giant pandas."
