Write a MythKusafiri saw the devil and took his name, or so the legend goes.
Kusafiri was a trickster. No one knows his origins; the story always begins with him as an adult. He was notorious for his deals, always capturing others in his twisted web of words. No matter who tried to go up against him,
Kusafiri always got what he wanted while finding a loophole on the other’s side.
Eventually, this caught the devil’s eye. Much of the controversy surrounding the legend stems from this. Some say that the devil was enraptured with him. Others insist that the devil was enraged that someone might be able to outwit him. Whatever the case, the story always has the devil taking mortal form to challenge
Kusafiri to a deal.
No one knows what the deal was about. Some say it was about knowledge. Others say it was about strength. Still others say it was about willpower. Whatever the case,
Kusafiri came back from the deal changed. He had the name
Kusafiri, the name the devil carried, and no one - not even
Kusafiri himself - could remember what his name had once been. His expression had hardened. When questioned, he refused to reveal anything about his deal with the devil.
In truth, no one knows for sure whether he won or he lost.
They say after that day,
Kusafiri left his pride and set out on his own. From then on, he’d wander the night in search of lions so desperate for something that they would be willing to accept help from a mysterious stranger. However, it is said that
Kusafiri’s deals had changed. There were consequences for making a deal with the one who held the devil’s name, and
Kusafiri made sure the lions paid them. The price of
Kusafiri’s deals was part of why only the most desperate of lions seemed to find him; only they would be willing to make the deal with them.
It is said that anyone who did came to regret it. In the end, they got what they wanted, but it came at much too high a cost.
No one knows the truth about
Kusafiri. Some say he is the lion of the legend, arguing that he has lived for long as a consequence of his deal with the devil. Others argue that he just resembles the appearance some stories have given
Kusafiri, and that there is no way to know that that was indeed the appearance the original
Kusafiri had (if indeed there even was an original
Kusafiri). Still others claimed that he was of the same bloodline, often citing him to be a descendent of the original
Kusafiri and the devil, and so may or may not have some of the same power lingering on him.
Kusafiri does nothing to clear the matter up, but if you look closely enough when someone is discussing the story, you can see him smile. Whether that is due to pride or amusement may never be known.
