'An adventurer's calling'
Emphyr was a novice adventurer, It was his source of living and he had just completed 10 guild quests earning him the rank, although 'novice' is just above 'rookie' it was still a large feat for someone whose job is to slay monsters or deliver goods, day by day, throughout the night, sometimes, not sleeping one bit. Admittedly, it took him longer than most creatures to get the rank promotion, it was because most creatures would've made parties in order to finish missions quicker. Alas, he was dubbed as someone 'terrifying' and 'cursed' because of his features, and so he traveled alone. Traveling to town after town, taking missions and requests all while wearing a cloak and mask to hide his identity, he perfectly loves his face and the creature that he was born as, but others don't seem to have the same thoughts. Nonetheless, He pays no mind to the words and whispers, after all,
"they are not the ones who will determine my worth, nor anyone else's for that matter".
He was on his way to the Kellion Kingdom for another task, he was to deliver a few goods for a merchant guild in the capital. It was still a few days of walking before he arrives, however, an event might set back the delivery even further. Before reaching the capital city, there were a few villages he had to go through if he were to follow the route. One of them was 'Roan', a bustling little village with farmers, adventurers, and merchants, mostly farming was the source of living for the locals here but items and rare loot from monsters encourage folks from far and wide. It was abundant with the bounty of the forests, the mountains, and land for farming, however, Roan was also known to be the village of adventurers. It was no stranger that adventurers and merchants would be flocking this town, as wild beasts and monsters crowd the surrounding area when night falls, and the locals and adventurers alike sell the items dropped by the beasts to the merchants, earning themselves a hefty price for every monster slain.
As he was resting in the tavern during nighttime, the once-bustling noise was silenced, all before a large sound of flapping and something heavy landing on the ground, screams of terror followed and were heard throughout the town. Emphyr quickly ran outside to see what the commotion was, and behold, a dragon towering over the village, spitting its fiery breath on the creatures. Dragons usually stayed high up in the mountain, however, something woke this one up, and it was furious. It was chaos, creatures running for their lives, buildings burning town, and debris everywhere. There were some adventures that were trying to subdue the dragon but none of them stood a chance. With a shout, he charged while the beast was looking the other way, wielding a sword in his mouth, he slashed the leg of the dragon dealing a bit of damage. The dragon growled and flicked its tail at Emphyr who was thrown back towards one of the buildings. The force knocked the air out of his body and he was disoriented, staggering to recollect himself, a cry shook him out of his confusion. A few meters away from the dragon was a small
Keldine pup, it had tears pouring from its eyes as it looked left and right for somewhere to hide, or perhaps for its parents. The still-disgruntled Emphyr, overwhelmed by wanting to protect the child, quickly grabbed his sword and charged at the beast once again, recklessly slashing all to protect the smaller canine. His teeth bit hard into the base of the sword, eyes full of anger and aggression towards the winged beast. As the dragon was about to attack once more, the sounds of horns entered the air, halting the fight. Reinforcements and knights have arrived to subdue the beast, the dragon could do nothing but admit defeat and retreat back to the mountains. Thinking that further fighting was not worth risking its life.
Emphyr stood next to the small
keldine, his heart was beating extremely fast and he was finally feeling the effects of the adrenaline. He couldn't calm down and he was terrified that the dragon was going to return, however, a small 'yip' snapped him back to reality. The
keldine pup bumped its head towards Emphyr's leg, its eyes still full of tears however, now had light in them. He did it... he somehow survived along with the pup while facing a dragon. As the knights and adventurers began to rescue any injured villagers and creatures, Emphyr finally calmed himself down, he was exhausted, beaten, and injured but he couldn't close his eyes, he could still hear the screams and shouts, terror and chaos filling the night. It was a day that would be forever etched in his mind.
Years later, the village was rebuilt into a better society, and the villagers, despite the chaos, chose to rebuild their lives instead of moving somewhere else. They're ever peaceful however they no longer welcome adventurers and guilds, thinking that it was the greed of an adventurer that led to the demise of their ancestors. Emphyr slowly got rid of his fear and returned to his life as an adventurer, now with a right-hand man and a family member,
Takeshi. After the chaos, the pup became an orphan with no one to take care of him, he decided to take the tiny creature with him on his adventures. Takeshi seems to no longer remember the nightmare from before, as he was still a child back then, however, Emphyr would never forget. It no longer haunts him at night, as he has learned and experienced a lot more since then, nowadays he's just a father that just worries for his reckless and impatient son. That day, he lost and gained himself, he lost his old self- the adventurer who was scared, who was feared because of his looks. The creature who lacked confidence in himself and chose to hide his face. He gained a new meaning to his life in the form of his family. A family that looks up to him and supports him, letting him see himself in another light and as someone important. He gained a home, he learned to joke and be genuinely happy. Overcoming the chaos of the past gave him his happiness.
