2024 Staff Kalon #4 💕🌟☁️ ThatPinkThing - winner posted!

Postby ThatPinkThing » Fri Dec 27, 2024 3:44 pm

they let me out of the archives to make a kal hehehe

Hello hello!! Shocking what color I picked, I know 🤪 I’m so excited to make another kal for y’all! I had fun with this one 😊

I do a lot of my kal work behind the scenes and wanted to share a bit with you guys! When I was brought on, I gravitated toward the nursery archive, and that’s been my place ever since. I hit my goal of archiving 200 batches before the end of the year. In fact, I’ve archived 226 batches as of today— over 500 individual kalons 💪 And when I say archived, I mean I’ve tracked down parents of batches, growths/edits/transfers of nursery kals, their previous owners, and any batches they’ve been a parent in. Finding data and compiling it makes me feel accomplished!

So to win this kal, I want you to tell me what makes them feel accomplished! Is it doing a hobby, their job, new things, or something else entirely? To answer that question, you have a limit of 750 words or 1 art piece. You may also do an extra 750 words on anything more about them, OR an extra art piece! Prettying up is allowed, and any decorative elements not depicting the kal will not count towards your art limit. You have until January 12th at CS rollover to January 13th to enter :3

    Kalon name: Bea
What makes them feel accomplished?: 728/750

For Bea, feeling accomplished in life hasn't always been an easy thing.
After all, life hasn't always been easy on the poor kalon.
Everything always felt like a rush, like they constantly had to be on the go or else everything would fall apart.

The sheer speed at which her life felt like it was constantly going at really made her stressed out!
She hadn't gotten to feel accomplished since being a little kit, when life was as simple as drawing a cute little picture for that gold star. Gosh what she wouldn't give to go back to simpler, calmer times.
Unfortunately, time marches forward, not back.

Exasperated at life, the frazzled kalon wasn't sure what she could do to cheer herself up.
All this stress all the time was surely bad for her health.
She had to find something that would help out her mental and physical health.

      At this point, there had been many hobbies that Bea had attempted over the years;
yoga, pottery, gardening, cooking...Each one was a disaster in one way or another.
Whether it was trying to do a yoga pose and knocking over her tv; or it was attempting a grand dinner and almost burning her entire apartment down.

Surely there was something that Bea could both be good at and make her feel satisfied, happy...healthy.

One day, while browsing online she noticed a popular trend going around called "crocheting" this pretty craft interested her, so she further investigated.
As she continued to search about this particularly pleasing craft, she saw the intricacies and beautiful ideas you could create by simply using yarn and hooks to weave together a gorgeous project!
She had to try this for herself!

Bea went out on a free day and bought all the supplies she could need for a basic attempt at the craft, crochet hooks, beautiful yarn, stitch markers and finally a yarn bowl.
She might've went a bit overboard considering it was her first time attempting this craft but who cares! She totally wanted to get into this!
That's when she found the perfect crochet craft to start with, the swatch. A basic square made to test the yarn and crochet stitch you wanted to use; and she started simple.

A simple square, it was lopsided, some spots were too tightly stitched and other spots were too loose...but finally she finished the little square.
She stared at it for a moment, rubbing her thumb across the yarns surface, before realizing it had been about 2 hours by the time she finished it!
That's when Bea had noticed, her mind had stopped racing, her stress had all but evaporated and the tension in her shoulders was released.

What was this feeling? It had been years since she had felt this way.
No thoughts pestering and gnawing at her psyche like usual, no muscles so tightly wound she felt as if she might keel over, nothing.

      It was peace.

Finally she had found a lovely little craft to give her peace and quiet. Thoughts of feeling proud of her little craft she completed took up the space instead, a pleasant feeling of accomplishment as she used a thumbtack to hang her silly little square up on her wall.

Now, she just had to make another square, and another, and another. Each more perfect than the last.
After about 60 swatch squares, she finally completed her ball of yarn.
      Wow!
      She did it!
A whole ball of yarn had been completed on something she enjoyed!

What a wonderous feeling this was! Her mind was calm, her body was soft and she had accomplished a completely new craft!
Well, accomplished was quite the word. After all, this was only the very basic item she could make by crocheting.
Oh boy was she excited to continue making new projects with her new-found joy!

Bea betted she would feel accomplished with every project she finished!
Not only could she feel happy as she made these lovely little objects, but now she found something to bring her joy and make her feel fulfilled in life!

Even if it is as simple as crocheting a cute little flower, or a teddy bear! It was amazing!

She couldn't wait to continue on her journey of finding new crafts to crochet, there was a whole world of patterns to discover after all!

Kalon name: Pwuff
What makes them feel accomplished?:
Pwuff had always been different. He wasn’t like the other creatures in the village—his fur was a shade of pink that no one else had, his ears were smaller than most, and his tail, though fluffy, was small had a distinct kink in it that made him seem clumsy, even though he wasn't. But despite these quirks, Pwuff had a secret that no one knew.

No one had ever believed that Pwuff could amount to much. He had been underestimated his whole life. The village was filled with creatures that could fly fast, lift heavy things, or build intricate nests. But Pwuff wasn’t the fastest flyer, nor the strongest creature, nor the most skilled builder. His talents, however, lay elsewhere—hidden beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to be revealed.

It had started when Pwuff was just a youngling. He had always been curious about the stars, the sky, the winds that rustled through the trees. Most of the other younglings in the village spent their days racing through the air, testing their agility, or showing off their strength in games. Pwuff, on the other hand, would lie on the soft grass, staring up at the sky, imagining the world beyond the clouds. He would ask questions no one could answer: Why did the stars shine? Where did the winds come from? And, most importantly, what lay beyond the horizon?

When he was older, he began to experiment. He tried to understand the patterns of the wind, how it changed with the seasons and how it could be harnessed. He built small kites to study its movements and took detailed notes. Every night, he'd draw the stars in a little book he'd kept since he was a youngling, trying to trace constellations and guess their meanings. While the other creatures mocked him for his strange obsessions, Pwuff didn’t mind. He had a quiet confidence that came from knowing that the answers to his questions weren’t as important as the questions themselves.

Then came the Great Festival.

Once every decade, the village held a grand competition, where creatures from all over gathered to showcase their abilities. The festival would last for three days, and each day had its own event. On the first day, there was a race through the forest. On the second, a strength contest. And on the third, the most coveted event—an innovation challenge, where participants would present something they had created, something new that no one had seen before.

Pwuff had never entered the competition. The idea of showing off felt foreign to him, and his inventions—though intriguing to him—were always met with snickers. But this year, something inside him stirred. He wanted to prove something, not to anyone else, but to himself.

He worked tirelessly for months. He had an idea, something that combined his love of the stars and his understanding of the wind. It was a contraption—a mechanical bird, powered by the wind and designed to fly as high as the stars. He built it piece by piece, testing it again and again. It wasn’t easy. There were failures, moments when he wanted to give up. But Pwuff had something the others didn’t: patience. While they focused on speed and strength, Pwuff knew that true accomplishment came from persistence, from refining and improving. And so, he kept going.

The day of the competition arrived, and Pwuff felt the familiar nerves creep up on him. The village square was packed with creatures, all showing off their talents. There were flyers who performed breathtaking aerial maneuvers, builders who displayed intricate, gravity-defying structures, and others who demonstrated their physical strength. Pwuff’s heart raced as he looked at the crowd, feeling small and insignificant among such grand displays of ability.

Finally, it was time for the innovation challenge. One by one, the participants stepped forward, presenting their creations. Each invention was impressive in its own right, but none had the quiet elegance of Pwuff’s design.

When his turn came, Pwuff stood in front of the judges, holding his mechanical bird in his hands. The bird was small, with wings made of delicate materials that shimmered in the sunlight. The body was a mixture of gears and springs, and its eyes glowed faintly with a soft light. Pwuff had named it “Zephyra,” after the winds that had inspired it.

He placed the bird gently on the ground, then stepped back. The crowd watched in silence as he activated the mechanism. At first, there was nothing—then, the bird’s wings began to flap. Slowly at first, but then more vigorously, as the wind caught the wings and propelled it into the air. The bird soared higher and higher, its wings catching the sunlight, its body twisting and turning with the breeze.

The crowd gasped in amazement. It wasn’t just a machine; it was a creation that seemed to be alive, something that captured the essence of the wind, the stars, and the sky. Zephyra flew gracefully, effortlessly, as though it had been born to glide among the stars.

When the bird finally descended, Pwuff’s heart was racing—not from fear, but from pride. The crowd erupted into applause, their earlier skepticism transformed into admiration. Pwuff had done it. He had accomplished something that no one had expected him to.

Later that evening, as the sun set and the stars began to appear in the sky, Pwuff stood alone on a hill, watching as Zephyra danced in the air above him. He smiled quietly to himself. He wasn’t the fastest, or the strongest, or the most skilled in the traditional sense. But in that moment, he realized that he didn’t have to be. True accomplishment, he knew, was about creating something meaningful, something that no one else could have made—and that was exactly what he had done.

The village would never see him the same way again. But it didn’t matter. Pwuff had already accomplished what he set out to do.
Extra:
Personality: Pwuffy is the epitome of softness, warmth, and kindness, with a personality that mirrors the fluffy clouds floating in a peaceful sky. Imagine someone who radiates a sense of comfort and security, a presence that instantly makes you feel at ease. Pwuffy has an aura of gentleness that envelops everyone around them, always ready to offer a kind word, a soft smile, or a warm hug when needed. Their personality is like a cozy blanket on a chilly day—soft, comforting, and full of positive energy.

With a soft heart and a gentle soul, Pwuffy is the kind of friend who always listens with empathy and understands without judgment. Their kind nature makes them a safe space for others, someone who brings lightness to even the heaviest of situations. They have a way of making people feel seen, heard, and loved, and they do it effortlessly with their unassuming, affectionate demeanor.

Playful and endearing, Pwuffy's charm lies in their ability to spread joy with little more than a gentle laugh or a happy twirl. There's a lightness to their spirit that makes everything feel less serious, as though all of life’s struggles can be softened and made easier to bear with a little Pwuffy touch.

Even in moments of frustration or uncertainty, Pwuffy’s soft personality shines through like a beacon of calm. Rather than lashing out, Pwuffy responds with patience and understanding, always taking the time to nurture both themselves and others. They exude a quiet strength, one that comes from knowing how to care and love with all their heart.

In short, Pwuffy is the embodiment of everything that is soft and warm in the world, a reminder that kindness and gentleness can be as powerful as anything else. Their fluffy personality not only invites comfort but also spreads a contagious sense of joy, peace, and affection wherever they go.

Kalon name: Stephan Cottenfluff
What makes them feel accomplished?: Image
Extra: Stephan feels accomplished when he brings joy to other kalons. His favorite way of doing this is by surprising them! For the most part this is done with gifts, but for those close to him he’ll do things that are really special. His favorite is surprise parties. Stephan will completely lose himself in the process of planning. What foods does the recipient like? Do they prefer streamers, confetti, or balloons? What colors match the kal’s personality? Should there be live music? Most importantly, who should be invited? Every detail is carefully planned and crafted with love in order to make someone’s day.
Of course not everyone needs a huge party. Stephan gets so much joy and validation from passively helping others. If you need a little treat for a pick me up he’ll always be there. Found a little trinket that you like, but maybe it’s not worth buying right now? Stephan will happily get it for you. Being able to bring a smile to others is the biggest accomplishment, and it makes Stephan’s heart swell with pride.

Kalon name: Rose
What makes them feel accomplished?:

"What are you working on?" Rose looked up, smiling at the group of kalon at the doorway. She gives them a broad smile, before waving them over.

"Oh just a little something I like to call... lunch!" She makes a dramatic gesture over the table, where a spread of tea sandwiches, as well as tea and cookies all reside. They have been placed with care, arranged to be pleasing to the eye as well as the mouth. And were those tiny pastries?

"Rose! You spoil us!"
Rose laughed, warm and hearty.

"Think nothing of it!" she reassures. "This, this is what I live to do!" Rose, as it was, takes great pride as a chef. They always try to make an experience of every meal, enjoying the smiles it brings to peoples faces as they try new things they never could have tried before, or classic things that bring them comfort and warmth. The feeling of everyone gathered together enjoying themselves was simply an added bonus.

"Hey Rose! Tell us, are you still gonna travel one day?" Rose gives a soft smile.

"Yeah! I'm going to share this with the world! You all just get to be my lucky first audience!" She chuckles softly, before wrapping up her friends in a hug. As she looks up, she sees more kalon start to gather. Soon enough, the whole room fills as stories and laughter are exchanged. This, these feelings, these memories, are what gives Rose her accomplished feelings. And one day? The whole world will feel it too!

Thank you so much everyone for entering! I had a difficult time choosing a winner, but I have to go with....

boogiebug!

I really, really liked that the feeling of accomplishment Bea gets from crocheting isn't hindered by the fact that she's still learning. That's a super real emotion that I know I've experienced, and I liked that she has the determination to keep going enthusiastically. I also liked that the feeling of accomplishment didn't just come from the act of creating something, it also came from her finally managing to find something to help her relax, which can be a super hard thing to do!

I'm also going to award honorable mentions to the other entries, because I definitely wanna do something to recognize your efforts! Usually I would do a runner-up as well, but I just started working on a batch, and I'm prepping my students for finals, so I'm gonna take things a little easier where I can :')

Griff, I loved that your idea involved not just the personal accomplishment of making good food, but the further effect of accomplishing bringing people together 🥹

glittermintfurry, I loved the dynamic pose of your art, the expressions, the variations in the confetti texture and background texture, and the warm lighting! All those things together made the piece so fun and pleasing to look at 🤩

Furrydogs12, the amount of world-building in your form is SO IMPRESSIVE, and it's SO well written! I like that your idea involved the fact that, yes, others saw them as finally accomplishing something, but what was more important was their own sense of accomplishment ☺️

The three of you each get an HM! Thank you all for entering, and have a WONDERFUL 2025!
