Macarons Order Up!
This kid came out darker than I expected, but gosh I like em.
Please tell me what they get up to after the sun goes down
and the fall air edges into frost, turning their breath to clouds.

Evening had settled over the town. A few stray snowflakes were settling on the ground, and the dusky sky was awash with purple and cream. A scarf was wrapped around my neck to try and keep out the chill, and my breath billowed out in clouds. As the sun went down, most people were making their way home. I was going somewhere much more exciting.
Compared to the rest of the street, the cafe was glowing. Fairy lights were strung up in the windows, and a good amount of people were already inside. I stepped inside, letting out a little sigh as warmth flooded through me. Weaving my way through the small crowd, I approached the counter and returned the wave the colorful man behind it gave me. Good to see you! he signed. Good to be here, I signed back. Deacon knew my routine, and didn't hesitant in making me a hot chocolate with a dollop of whipped cream. I watched him, sipping happily, while he interacted with customers and welcomed people into the building. They stood around, sat on beanbags, eyes bright and mouths moving quickly to show their excitement. It was when the sun had gone down completely that Deacon took to the small stage at the back of the room. Everyone turned to face him.
Welcome everyone to the open mic night!
His mouth moved, and I knew he was speaking to the others, but I appreciated him signing for me.
We've got a stellar lineup here for you tonight so kick back, relax, and enjoy the talent!
Everyone clapped as he left the stage, and for a moment I was reminded of how bittersweet it was that I needed to rely on others to know what reaction to make. I only knew to clap when they did, and I could only tell by their facial expressions how the performer sounded. But I watched everyone all the same, feeling a sense of pride, knowing that whether I could hear them or not they were having a good time.
I felt the usual kick of nerves when the keyboard was pulled out and Deacon was gesturing for me to come up. Please welcome one of our incredibly talented regulars, Etienne! They clapped as I sat down, but not how they usually would; silently, so I could see it rather than imagine what it sounded like.
Taking a breath, I placed my fingers on the keyboard, and began to play. The keys were so familiar, the movements so natural. I'd been playing since I was young, and people told me I was good. I took their word for it; I'd never heard a single note in my life. Ironic, really, with ears like mine. I'd never hear what I could play, but just being able play at all was enough.
Day to day life could be hard. But being here after dark, losing myself in the silent music, in this safe place, things never felt more okay.
