A vel'ani (plural vel'ani, shorthand vel/vels) is a small, ferret-like sophont hailing from a world long lost. They've become a common sight anywhere mana is abundant since they were initially discovered around 15 years ago. A vel can be identified by the vents along its neck, which dispel excess mana at will... and the fact that they'll usually just tell you what they are if you ask. Vel'ani are highly intelligent and capable of human speech. Most, however, prefer just to use short-range telepathy instead, as they sound a little squeaky to most humanoids. As extremely adept magic wielders by their very nature, vels can almost always be found on wizard college rosters and research teams - especially where research regarding the veil and the void is concerned.

The Velar Research Institute is an organization dedicated to the preservation, research, and utilization of the anomaly which brought the Vel'ani to this world - a rip in the veil which separates the layers of reality which leads directly into the void. The VRI was founded 12 years ago when mage skirmishes in the vicinity of the anomaly made its necessity apparent. As the only creatures that can survive a two-way trip to the void, vels have proven to be invaluable coworkers in this burgeoning field - a boon for them as well, as the truth of their own nature is as lost to them as their homeworld.

✧ I reserve the right to update these rules as needed; I will post a synopsis of any rule changes as an announcement on the main thread and any threads related to the rules changed.
✦ To participate in the species, users must create and maintain an archive on the archive thread.
✧ Vel’ani are a semi-open species. Anyone can make their own using the official lines. However, there are certain restrictions in place as far as traits, number obtained in a set period of time, and so on. Please do not create Vels that deviate from these restrictions.
✦ Please do not trace, copy, reproduce, or redistribute Vel’ani content that does not belong to you without express permission.
✧ Please credit the artist(s) on any personal offsite archives. (Credit my userpage here for the lines, if applicable.)
✦ Do not remove the signature.
✧ While there is a set “canon” setting the Velar Research Institute (and associated ARG) exists within, you can develop your Vel in any setting you’d like. They do hop in and out of rifts, after all!

✦ You can own as many Vel’ani as you’d like, provided you are not blacklisted from the species.
✧ You may only obtain one Vel’ani through the main adopts per month, and the same limit applies to expeditions. Exceptions may be made for event adopts/expeditions.
✦ Vel'ani cannot be co-owned. Only one person may list a Vel on their archive page, and only that person can do anything with that Vel.
✧ You are responsible for keeping track of the Vel’ani and items you own via the communal archive.
✦ Vel’ani may only be resold for the currency and amount you obtained them for. (If you obtained a Vel for free, you cannot sell it for any currency, real or virtual.)
✧ Vel’ani may only be traded for other Vel’ani and Vel'ani items.
✦ If you no longer want a Vel’ani you own, but do not have anyone you’d like to trade or transfer it to, you may host a readoption contest by posting the required form on the archive update thread. You can contact the staff to host the contest for you if you'd rather not do so yourself.
✧ Once a readoption contest has an entry or the form is posted on the archive updates thread, it cannot be cancelled. Contests should be judged within a month of concluding. If a winner is not chosen by then, and attempts to reach you fail, staff may decide on a winner and fill out the forms in your stead.
✦ To make any changes of ownership official, both the old and new owner must post on the archive update thread with the requisite forms.

✦ Designs must adhere to CS rules; nothing offensive, overly gorey, or suggestive.
✧ All Vel’ani should be made on the official lines via CS Oekaki, though exceptions may be made for special adopt events.
✦ You may not edit or change a Vel’ani’s design once it has been approved.
✧ You may only edit an existing Vel’s traits if you have the applicable item. This only allows you to change the Vel’ani’s traits; it does not allow you to alter the design, color palette, root type, or stats.
✦ All Vel’ani must have mana vents somewhere visible and appropriate on their body. They should also be, in general, clearly recognizable as a Vel’ani. Edits that obfuscate the mana vents or change the proportions or silhouette of the Vel to the point where the species is no longer recognizable may be declined.
✧ All Vel'ani must have one of four Root types. The base can be recolored, but the lines should remain untouched. Custom Roots are not permitted.
✦ Even if the entire body is edited, the pose and proportions should remain roughly the same as the original base.
✧ There are a few traits which cannot be used on Vel'ani created via blueprint, which can only be applied via item to existing Vel'ani. These traits are:

✦ Design transfers into the species will be considered on a case-by-case basis. You must have permission from the original artist(s) and species owner, if applicable; if the original design was part of another closed/semi-open species, that original version must no longer be in use.
✧ Designs transferred out of the species must also have the artist’s permission. Former Vels will be struck from the archive and will no longer be eligible to participate in the species.
✦ New (under 2 months old) or strangely empty accounts suspected of being “shells” meant to get around monthly adoption limits may be restricted from obtaining Vels/items until such suspicions are cleared (either by account age or by clearly being a unique person.)
✧ While there are no limits on trades, transfers, or sales per month, if it becomes clear you are using other accounts to obtain Vel’ani or items you otherwise would not have been able to get due to monthly limits, all involved accounts will be blacklisted.
✦ Violating any of the above rules may earn you a strike, depending on severity. Users with one or more strikes may be barred from participating in certain activities; users with three strikes will be blacklisted.
✧ Blacklisted accounts are barred from participating in any aspect of the species indefinitely from the day they are blacklisted.
✦ Strikes and blacklistings may be appealed by contacting the species owner.
✧ Vel’ani on blacklisted accounts will be handled on a case-by-case basis. In most instances, a blacklisted user will be asked to transfer any designs they created or that were not originally Vel'ani out of the species, and the Vels left behind after a month will be considered "returned to the void" (permanently retired from the species). Exceptions may be made for particularly egregious cases, or where otherwise deemed necessary.
