Prompt:
I honestly do not have a favorite bird (as I do not have favorites of most things..). But I do have fond memories of some. Though it may not be the most beautiful or loved, I do like the Mockingbird. We had some at my home when I was little that would defend our home from hawks that would try and go after other small creatures. Many birds have so much more to them than we generally give them credit for..

Prompt: Penguins <3
penguins live in many places and there's about 2 dozen species but some universals between different species are:
- very silly
- little guy wearing a tux
- playing in mud is fun (little guy wearing a dirty tux)
- loud and squawky
- ridiculous style of running
- hmmmm yes belly toboggans are easier than running
- flying? nah, that's too much work
- round and soft
- hi, human! Is that thing on your clothes food? I'm gonna try swallowing it! Oh I couldn't swallow it! Is that food? I'm gonna try swallowing it! Oh I couldn't swallow it! [etc]
- their heads are too full of soft to contain any brain
- stubborn!
- why would I migrate for the winter (properly) when I can cuddle my friends???
- in South Africa, they fill the same urban ecosystem niche as raccoons or herring gulls or foxes, and just go around stealing things from bins to eat and generally being a nuisance. I think this is funny. It's hard to imagine them being good at this
I read a study around October that said that the reason penguins are seen as one of the most universally cute birds is because they have this weirdly human looking silhouette to them, and because they're very small, and because they have dark markings around their eyes that make their eyes look larger, and it's hard to tell where they're looking so it's very hard for them to look threatening to a primate, they sort of just meet all the possible criteria for something that's not a mammal to be cute to us. I think those researchers must have also forgot "just wants hugs" and "fluffy" as cute things that apply to penguins, though
I have a plushie penguin my brother's wife bought for me for 50p in a charity shop and he is very beloved. I'd decided not to bring any plushies with me to uni that year and that was a Mistake so when she visited and decided to go shopping, I picked out the only thing I wanted her to get for me (she'd not got me a birthday present yet). He probably has a similar amount of brainpower to most real penguins. He is in my avatar atm
