let me preface this by saying, rene and pepperpoppy are not together. they never will be, not in this life-- maybe in another.
allow me, however, to riddle you this. two utter gay failures, best friends and No More, working together to take care of a kit who looks an awful lot like both of them. eh? ehhh??? are you not entertained?
rene is the king of renatulus, for some context. pepperpoppy is his best friend and his job is to hang out in the castle and have fun. i think technically the term is "favorite" (or king's favorite) but when have i ever cared about accuracy. they're both very young, 19 or 20 in human years, rene forced onto the throne by the wills of higher powers and pepperpoppy there for the bit. he's kind of an unofficial jester but a lot more intimate than that-- he's rene's confidante and friend, practically an advisor. practically a lover.
pepperpoppy is very very gay you see. and very very in love with his best friend. he finds rene to be beautiful for starters, admirable in his rule and sympathetic for his backstory. a fair and caring ruler. he only wants the best for his people. in such proximity, how could you not fall in love? perhaps selfishly, pepperpoppy wants to take care of him. wants to be the one to see the smile he so rarely shows.
rene sees his friend similarly. pepperpoppy's so pretty, so talented, so kind. so good to him. rene would be in love too, it's a miracle he's not head over heels, but as previously stated; he's young, and he's busy. too, too busy. he's exhausted. in no state to notice the feelings between them, let alone process them.
even if he did, see, rene has a... supervisor, we'll say. spirits often take the form of birds and snakes to get a closer view of mortal life, and rene's own spirit guide junebird is around near constantly. she was the one to wipe his memories, to guide him onto the throne, to steal him away from his orphaned sisters and force him into this leadership position. he's miserable, and she's getting what she wants. and a romantic relationship would only distract him, would remind him that he's capable of his own thoughts and feelings. we can't have that. junebird wouldn't let it happen.
so. they're hopeless.
but rene still does what a good king would do, of course. he takes care of those who enter his castle, whether royal or beggar-- and when an orphaned kit comes into his care who is he to turn them away? the guard is busy, the healers and mages have their paws full, but pepperpoppy's been complaining of boredom and he loves children. always said he wanted his own. so rene allows him to take him under his wing, handle most of the care-- but, of course, with his proximity to pepperpoppy he becomes an affectionate figure for the kit as well. he misses taking care of people.
and maybe he sees pepperpoppy in the kit's big eyes.
