Sunrise.
Midnight.
Neither could ever meet. They ruled their own individual portion of the cycle of time. They had jobs to do.
It was an eclipse when the kits were born. A time when day was interrupted by darkness, something strange and, to some cats, intrusive. But like a stormy afternoon, or a sunny morning, or a snowy leafbare day, this would have no effect on the kits. Surely. It was impossible.
This was no sign from StarClan, nothing like clouds covering the full moon on a star-filled night. This was a regular, albeit rare, occurrence. That’s what they all said. What they nervously murmured, what they tried to tell themselves. It was what the medicine cat had assured them. If this eclipse were some sort of sign from StarClan, they would have told her. Warned her. Said something, anything.
The eclipse was normal, just as the kits would be. The clan should be rejoicing, this was a time when new life was being breathed into their lives. The parents should be celebrated. A birth is stressful enough without rumors being whispered among the clan. It wasn’t fair to add to add to the burden of their worries.
The kits would be fine, healthy, normal. They had to be.
