It has to do with the lore and yes, their anatomy. There are two primary reasons that Novibats cannot identify as straight.
1: They have no reproductive organs.
They reproduce with the catalystic magic found in their StarJewels.
2: Their basic reproductive group involves three Novibats in a mutual relationship.
It all started when Novibats first discovered the power of StarJewels.
StarJewels (the little carrying chambers Novibats wear around their neck) hold a
central stone that contains magical energy. This magic has been used for transforming regular fruit bats into Novibats for as long as the original stone has been on Earth.
Novibats are actually sexless creatures. When regular fruit bats become Novibats, they lose some resemblance to their previous form. Among these losses is their reproductive organs. They also double in size, becoming the size of small dogs. The children of Original Novibats also lack reproductive organs, so Novibat culture has expanded to accommodate this lack of need for binary reproduction. In this way, they lost the need for heterosexuality.
In order to reproduce, they must first age to adulthood using their StarJewel, which uses most of the magic inside of the central stone. After they age, there is enough energy left inside the central stone for a contribution to 3 litters of children.
Original Novibats discovered that groups of three, rather than groups of two, were more beneficial for reproduction.
Groups of Three: Can reproduce 3 times together. Can yield 2-3 children per attempt.
Groups of Two: Can reproduce 2 times together. Can yield 1 child per attempt.
