It was complete chance.

I had seen him through the breaks in the branches, through the leaves on the trees, and I was too shy to ever approach... he was always with the other cats, always surrounded, and that was scary. Were all these cats friendly? Was he friendly? Yet, I was so intrigued, that curiosity finally won out - despite the echoes of my mother running through my thoughts. Curiosity kills the cat.

My chance came without much warning. He was alone for the first time, and I didn't even realize I was moving until I was in front of him, both of us staring at each other in shock.

"Uhhh... hi?" He broke the silence first, making me jolt out of my own confusion and surprise. He looked at me with expectant eyes, blinking - but not on alert or defensive.

"I, uh, I'm so... I'm so sorry," I stumbled out, backing up a little bit. "I don't know what came over me I just really wanted to meet you and I've been looking at you through the trees and - oh no that sounds way too creepy I'm so sorry - but um now that I'm here I guess I... uh..." I had trailed off, unsure of myself now.

To his credit, he just laughed lightly, not seeming to mind that I was anxious, nervous, and completely maniacal with how I was stumbling over my words. "I'm Applepaw," he said.

"Kiwi."

I met up with him nearly every evening, and he would tell me all about his clan, his training, how he was going to be a warrior soon. I learned so much about 'clan' customs, and I loved hearing him talk. He also did his fair share of listening, my ramblings never quite lost on him like it was with other cats. And one of those rambles came shortly before his own warrior ceremony.

Applepaw had been describing what a warrior name was, what an honor it was to get one, but my mind had focused on another aspect of his name. "Hey, Applepaw... what even is an apple anyway?"

This made him pause, de-railed completely, his mouth open in shock. He looked down to his bandanna that he didn't go anywhere without, he gave me an incredulous look, and gave a soft playful cuff over my ears. "This is an apple," he laughed, pointing to the images on his bandanna with his nose.

"Well, yeah, but like... what is it? What does it taste like? What's it smell like? How come I haven't seen one or eaten one or anything? I mean, I know I'm one to talk being named after a fruit too, but I know for a fact I've seen a kiwi before. They're brown, fuzzy, and not at all appealing. Too mushy," I rambled, gaining a faraway look as I remembered being told about the strange fruit I was named after, and finally getting to try one.

Applepaw laughed again, but shuffled his paws. "Well, I guess I can't really help with that. I don't know where to find one. I know my dad really likes them, though, so maybe I'll ask him to get one for me so we can experience it together. I just know they've been such a part of my family that that's the reason I was named after one," he chuckled, giving his bandanna an appreciative sniff.

That was when the idea struck my head. His warrior ceremony meant so much to him, and what kind of friend would I be to miss it?

The day was warm, yet there was a cool, crisp breeze in the air. The changing weather didn't bother me though - I had a mission to complete. I had a delicacy with me, bright green, larger than I expected, and ready to be given as a gift to my best friend in the whole world.

I had made a promise to myself that I wouldn't miss Applepaw's warrior ceremony.

I arrived in the middle, causing the whole thing to be in a stand still. Not daring to meet anyone's eyes - but catching the green of Applepaw's eyes that almost reflected the same green of the skin of the apple at my feet anyway - I only had one thing to say. "I finally know what an apple is... and I want to join your clan."

The rest has been history, and Appleglow and I go apple picking every year. They are by far my favorite fruit, for more reasons than one.
