Range Trotters are the result of crossbreeding Orlov Trotters, Finnhorses, Welsh Cobs (section C & D) and Hanoverians. Later crosses of Quarter Horses, Paint and Appaloosas to gain color and to give a boost to their hardiness. With a height average of 13-15 hands, they're a hardy breed with characteristics for various disciplines.

Created for use as work, carriage and leisure riding horses originally, they now serve as long-distance range horses, such as work with Park Rangers and mounted officers.

Willing and eager personalities, most are quickly trained to be bombproof and therefore trusted mounts in all lines of work; some are being seen in local show jumping competitions, others are notably used in therapeutic sessions for their calm temperaments. Harness races and endurance trials are common for the breed, as they are able to sustain an extended trot without tire. Cross-Country competitions see some of the taller Trotters, but due to their cob lineage this is still uncommon.

Despite the variety of competitions and work these horses are being seen in, they are still famously skilled as endurance racers. Many competitors have chosen Range Trotters due to their tireless work ethic, as well as the ease in which they can be trained. Many have become champions in endurance trials, and they have quickly become a sought after breed for their natural ability.

Seeking inspiration, I squinted in the sun as one name in particular caught my eye. Flying Poppy at first I giggled to myself at the fact a pirate ship had such a girly name then I remembered the meaning of the flower along with its bright red color. I glanced back at the mare who was dozing in the sun and called out "Poppy". She opened her eyes and whickered back at me that just cemented it in my mind this girl was going to by Flying Poppy from now on.

I was trying to come up with a fishy pun that'd make a good boat name, and I think The Codfather would work so well - just imagine it! That'd be a ship nobody would want to mess with for sure, LOL. So that's how I chose this trotter's show name.

In The Godfather, the family patriarch is named Don Vito Corleone - in other words, he's the guy that's also known as the Godfather. I thought it'd be funny to make this trotter's barn name a matching pun, so I changed the character's last name to be fishy!

Prompt: Robin Hobb's amazing epic fantasy series Realm of the Elderlings has a trilogy in it that revolves around pirates and ships (liveships). One of the series' liveships is named Vivacia, and she is taken over by Captain Kennit of the Pirate Isles and decides to help him in his piracy. I'm probably not doing the books much justice with this description, but the entire series is wonderful and all the seemingly unrelated trilogies that make it up (there are 4 or 5 in total) all come together in the final one in a truly magical finale. In honor of this series that made me laugh, cry, and everything in-between, I am naming this trotter after Vivacia.

Prompt: Being stuck in one place for long periods of time is definitely not what he would consider enjoyable, but Rings is certainly not in despair, either. Determined to find a way out of here, he spends most of his time sneaking around on the ship to gain as much information as possible before the pirates notice him outside of the room he was locked in and try to lock him up again. This usually results in a rather comical race around the lower decks until the pirates manage to corner him, but each time he learns more about the layout of the ship. Soon, he is confident, he will be able to find the way up to the top deck of the ship to make his escape. In the meantime, he finds some entertainment in causing as much chaos for the pirates as he possibly can. After all, if they are going to inconvenience him like this, he might as well return the favor!

Range Trotter #STF010 based on this drawing by HowlingHooves
by Pandapop @ Wed May 08, 2024 8:15 pm [Reply]

This Trotter refuses to leave the ship without some sort of souvenir.
What are they stealing?

In 1810, Zheng Yi Sao negotiated a surrender to the Qing authorities that allowed her and Zhang Bao to retain a substantial fleet and avoid prosecution. At the time of her surrender, she personally commanded 24 ships and over 1,400 pirates. She died in 1844 at the age of about 68, having lived a relatively peaceful and prosperous life since the end of her career in piracy. Zheng Yi Sao has been described as not only history's most successful female pirate, but one of the most successful pirates in history.

As a young dog, Monet's home was hit by a storm, the building and all buildings around it torn to pieces. Her and all the other dogs were scattered from each other and their caretakers/family/handlers. Monet herself was lost deep in the rubble, crawling underneath it for as long as she could one day, before she'd have to rest, and try again the next day. It was dark and damp, hard to see or smell where to go, which way was what.

After a couple days underneath the rubble, she faintly heard the sounds of speaking, people calling out, dogs barking, and followed it. She would stop, turn her head, and listen, and go in the direction she thought the sound was coming from. Eventually she got close enough that her own barks were heard, and she was uncovered. Every dog retrieved and unharmed, they were all back together, and while it took awhile for their house to be rebuilt, she was secure in her home once again.

The aftermath of the storm lived on with her for awhile, though, causing her to sometimes feel lost in a different sense. Any loud sounds, especially those of other storms, would make her anxious, and panic. She would be unable to calm herself down, thinking it would happen again. The only things that would calm her was her best friend and her handler. Together they would join her, lay down with or on her until it passed.

It took quite awhile of slow exposure to loud sounds, and even longer for storms, her handler and friends with her to show her that it wasn't upsetting, that just because it was a loud or scary noise does not mean it would separate her, and that she could always listen and find them again.

Left crying weakly along the shore, she wandered as far as she could looking for her home. Who knows how long she had been all alone or how on earth she had managed to find herself in this dire situation but her pleas were answered when two caring souls heard her soft wailing and brought her home to get her help. On the brink of starvation, her strength and resilience shone through as she fought for weeks to recover. Though her kind rescuers were unable to house her permanently, they searched long and hard to make sure to find her the perfect home where she would always be loved and cherished. Luck was on their side when a close friend with a soft spot for all creatures, big and small, reached out hoping to meet the brave little one. It turned out to be exactly the match everyone had hoped for! Little did her new mom know, Bayside wasn't the only one being saved from a dark and uncertain future that day. Her new family could never find themselves lost again with her by their side. She always seems to know when her loved ones are struggling to chase their own storm clouds away and Bayside has spent every day since brightening the lives of those fortunate enough to spend time with her ♡

~ Told through Mortes perspective -
Castor

As a small, trembling creature, I found myself suddenly thrust into a world of brightness and uncertainty. The darkness that had once surrounded me, though terrifying, had also been a source of comfort - a familiar embrace that shielded me from the unknown. With care, I was bathed and dried, then placed in a lone cage with food and water. Feeling overwhelmed, I retreated to a corner, tail tucked between my legs, head resting on my paws. Thoughts raced through my mind - where was I? Who were these people? What did they want from me?

Days passed, and I barely touched the food or water offered. Concerned voices tried to reach me, but I remained withdrawn, lost in my own inner turmoil, unsure of my identity. Until one day, a new presence entered my life - Castor, a dog both blind and deaf, yet wearing a grin that seemed to radiate warmth. He sat outside my cage, telling stories and sharing jokes, slowly coaxing me out of my shell.

I found myself drawn to Castor, crawling closer to lay by his side as he sang songs and shared his perspectives on the world.
On a particularly warm autumn night, Castor whispered that he wished he could see the stars. In that moment, I realized my purpose - just as Castor had been a light in my darkest moments, I could be his guide, painting pictures of the world he could not see.

With a newfound sense of connection and understanding, I began to describe the twinkling stars, the moonlight casting its grey glow, and the fireflies dancing beneath the night sky.

In that moment, I understood that my own darkness had been transformed into a source of comfort and connection, and that the true terror lay not in the unknown, but in the isolation of being alone. With Castor by my side, I found a renewed sense of purpose and the courage to embrace the brightness that surrounded me.
