that necklace is a failed dream catcher. It is the reason he is what he is. He used to simply study the brain, how dreams and thoughts worked, and collect dream catchers. When he bought this particular one, he woke up to find himself a vampire. He learned he could feed off of unneeded dreams and started doing that. The dream catcher glows blue when there are unneeded thoughts around for him to feed on.
