Midnight has descended. As a cloud passes over the moon, it becomes pitch black. I crouched down, unable to even see my paws. Then, the cloud is gone, but something else has come. A wolf, darker than night, with deadly yellow eyes is watching me. He stalks closer, knowing that I can't move. I'm so scared I can't even howl for help. I'm older than him, if only by months, but he is easily twice my size, maybe more. Moonlight defines his muscles and bones. He stalks forward, the wolf, half starved. The rabbit I just caught is definitely what he wants. I try to find my voice, but it's as though I don't even have a throat, that's how useless it is. In the few moments that's he's been here, he's cut the too-short distance between us in half. I quietly whimper, still scared stiff. He stops moving and releases a snarl that could have come from a lion, then he races forward, seeming to move faster than light, but I can see every individual strand of fur on his back as he approaches. Then, another thunderous snarl comes from behind me, and another wolf leaps at the giant one. "Death, you idiot! We're not even supposed to be here, how dare you show yourself?", the new wolf growled, the black wolf, Death, pinned beneath him. Death takes one swipe at the new wolf, and he go's flying. He has grey and brown fur that waves in the wind. He lets out a gasp as his back hits a tree, and blood leaks slowly down his shining fur. "I know what I'm doing, Claw. Besides, she can't do anything. Look at her,", he scoffed, waving towards me with his tail. "Wh-who are you two?", I asked, to scared to really care. "Oh, well, I am the important one, Death, and that's my brother, Claw, the stupid one,", he laughed, a low, throaty sound. "I'm...surprised,", Claw huffed, slowly getting up, from the scars covering his silky fur, it was obvious that Death hurt him a lot. I felt very sorry for him, but he didn't seem to notice. "Our parents were banished from this part of the forest, and yet, you haven't called for someone to get rid of us yet,", he said, a note of surprise in his voice. "Your parents were banished, not you. My father can't banish you two if you haven't done anything,", I said, defiance coating my feather-light voice. I flicked the still-warm rabbit to the brothers, seeing Claw watch it as I spoke. "I can ca-" "Did you just say your father?", Death snarled, hackles raising. I backed away, worried. "Yes, my father,", I said nervously. Claw pushed Death away, annoyed. "Show her mercy. She hasn't hurt us, so we don't hurt her, got it?", he growled. I let out a sigh of relief as Death huffed in agreement. "C'mon, let's go,", Claw smiled at me. "What?", I asked, confused. "Death won't be happy unless you come cause he'll worry that you told someone, so please come, or I'm gonna get pulp beat out of me for not forcing you,", he explained, looking annoyed at Death. "Well, I've been needing an adventure anyways!", I smiled, running by his side to catch up with Death. "Follow me, I know some real good escape routes from here that my dad's never even smelled!", I said cheerily, leading them further from the camp.
