Flaxen (written as Ff in your horse's genotype) does not show on horses with a black base coat, so the lighter mane in a silver dapple horse is caused by the silver gene. Silver has the opposite effect - it will not lighten the mane of a red based horse even if the gene is present. However, this does not mean a black based horse cannot be a carrier of flaxen. Flaxen is also recessive and needs to be homozygous (ff) to show.
Silver only needs one copy of the gene to show, so Zz is correct for a silver dapple, but so is ZZ.
Hopefully I didn't make that sound confusing?![]()
If you happen to be interested, I gave the information on this site a read when I first started trying to learn the how coat colors worked in horses. It might be a little out of date now but the majority of the information there is accurate and still very useful! The game window at the end is also helpful.
