Zanzibar
Born malnourished and underweight, Zanzibar was rejected by his mother from the beginning.
The young colt was just within the viability period when drought-like weather conditions descended upon his little valley. The Rangers still don't know why his mother went into labor so early, but when she gave birth, a team was on a higher ridgeline studying the new herd. It was unknown if she was a first time mother, or maybe if the stress of horrible weather and new locations drove her to give birth too early; regardless, by evening, the mare had left young Zanzibar to fend for himself. He was too weak to even attempt to follow his natal herd.
Once he was brought into the facility, Zanzibar showed just how much he was willing to fight to live, despite all of the odds stacking against him. Constantly sickly, the veterinarian was constantly coming to check on him, administer medication, and splint his legs to ensure they developed correctly. Many times, the staff were afraid that they would lose him entirely. But he fought with everything his little body had, and slowly grew into a strong, sweet young stallion that quickly became the staff's star Ambassador.
