This will be part of an entry into this contest: Reverie Dawn Estate 3-day eventing for the show jumping.
Horse: Soaring in the Wind (Winny)
Rider: Megan Brown (full details pending)
Story:
Megan doesn't normally take her horses too far from their stables in the south of England but she didn't want to miss the chance to explore the Scottish Moorland whilst gaining more competition experience for her mare. They are working on getting the mare more experience with 3-day eventing but English riding has never been the mare's strong point. Similarly, Megan continues to attempt to grasp the nuisances of western but the lack of contact and extension has her struggling, but both persevere in the hopes of a middle ground.
After making the 10 hour drive (including stops) up to Scotland the weather was not co-operating, the skies got darker and darker the further north they travelled. The weather forecast indicated could but the darkness of the skies implied imminent rain. Megan realised she should have expected more rain the north but wasn't quite prepared for what they would face. It seemed with every passing minute their plans for hacking out were dashed, even Winny didn't seem keen at the thought of hacking out in the rain.
The morning of the first day the heavens opened, making the dressage more difficult then in already was. Although the mare tolerated the rain well, it didn't help her focus on completing the moves correctly. Her focus dropped at several points, reducing their already low score. The cross country went a little better but the rain the day before made the conditions less then favourable. However, all the hacking and endurance riding the pair had done paid off and the pair went far better in the cross country then the disaster that was the dressage. The final day was the show jumping and rain managed to hold off, even if the skies threatened rain at every moment, looming dark over their heads. As they entered the area Megan was glad that there were not too many puddles, so less change of a run-out due to a reflection caught in the corner of Winny's eye. Still, together they tried to find the right balance of good lines and good time, trying not to take the corners too tight for fear that the arena surface might not behave, there would be no falls today!
As they waited for the results the pair did finally get to go on a hack around the moors, using it as a perfectly rewarding cooldown and reward for the both of them. The scenery made the travels and trials of the weather worthwhile. When the sun did dare to breach the clouds it was the most beautiful sight.
