Bixolae (bicks-oh-lay) Frogs, or Bix, are a rare species of poisonous frog recently discovered in 2022. They are descendants of the Poison Dart Frog and come in a wide variety of different colors.
These frogs live in wet, tropical forests in Central and South America. Occasionally, they can be heard calling in the flooded forest. Most species of frogs have well-developed vocal structures capable of producing various sounds that attract mates, advertise territories or express distress.
Bix are a generally small species, ranging from 25 to 40 millimeters in length. They feed mostly on small insects such as ants and termites, which they find on the forest floor. Bix are believed to gain their poison from a specific arthropod and other insects that they eat in the wild and these insects most likely acquire the poison from their plant diet. As a result, bix frogs in human care on a diet of crickets and other non-poisonous insects are not poisonous themselves.
Unlike any other frog, they only lay up to two eggs in a clutch, contributing to their low population. In wet tropical rainforests, both sexes breed throughout the year, with rainfall being the primary factor controlling the timing of reproductive activity. In general, the male will lead the female to a site where he has chosen to lay the eggs. Females will deposit their eggs ontop of a leaf that is submerged in water.
