Heterochromia prompt:
"Wafflepaw?"
It had been silent for a while. Mosspaw was pretty sure their friend had sensed something was up before the moment they'd approached her, asking to head down to the lake for a talk. Maybe they'd looked too solemn. On the contrary, maybe they'd never been too good at hiding their emotions.
The pause, which couldn't have taken more than a moment, hung more thickly in the air than the rest of their silence had.
"...yes?"
Mosspaw looked down into the water lapping gently against their paws, taking their own pause to collect their thoughts. In their reflection they looked nervous, the expression reflecting endlessly between the water, their glasses and back again. A thick cluster of trees nearly blotted out the sun, letting only a thin sliver backlight them against the water. They felt very small.
"I… I'm not sure this is going to work out." They finally spoke, looking up from the lake. They pushed their glasses up against their muzzle, trying not to look their friend in the face.
"Oh." Wafflepaw said in that particular voice; the one where she was much more upset than she wanted to let on.
Mosspaw waited her to say something more, but she didn't. When they finally worked up the nerve to look at her, she mostly just looked conflicted.
"I just…" She stammered after a gentle nudge. "I don't know. I kinda expected this, with, like… you being you. I don't know. It still… I'm still disappointed."
Mosspaw wrapped their tail up tighter around themself. "I know. I'm sorry."
"I dunno. Don't be sorry." Wafflepaw started licking her chest awkwardly. "It is just you, though, right? I'm not just weird or something."
Mosspaw laughed a little, gazing back down at the water. "You're pretty weird. But no, it wasn't you or anything. I'm sure you'll make some other cat plenty happy."
Without even looking at her, Wafflepaw seemed more relaxed. "Well, alright. And we'll still be friends, yeah?"
"Of course. Best friends."
Wafflepaw wrapped them up in a clumsy hug that nearly knocked the both of them into the lake. "Aw, don't sound so sad about it. Like, yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm bummed, too. But like, you were so weird that whole time. At least things'll go back to not being weird."
Mosspaw laughed for real this time. "Oh, so you're not weird, but I am?"
"Yes, exactly." Wafflepaw swatted their nose with a paw, backing up. "Anyway, if we're done with all that, what do you say we go back to camp and get a snack? I'm starving."
Mosspaw rolled their eyes, smiling. "Alright, sure. Just… give me a sec, okay?"
"Mm, take your time." Wafflepaw flicked them with her tail, trotting off. Probably to wait for them somewhere. Hopefully.
They looked back down at the water. They still looked nervous, and a little sad. They were a little sad.
But in a way, they felt happier, too. A little more true to themself.
"Hey, Wafflepaw! Wait up!"
And as they trotted off after their friend, light hit the water. The sun had finally risen over the trees.
Unnatural eye color prompt:
Today hadn't felt real.
Mosspaw remained laying in the center of camp, grass flattened all around them where other cats had been laying throughout the night. They still should've been there, in their opinion. They weren't ready to say goodbye yet.
They looked at the grass in front of them. Even between their paws, trapped in bits on their claws, there were tufty strands of white fur. Their mentor had always shed so much, all over the medicine den. They were always finding it in the herb supply, and her nest, and even their own nest.
They choked down a sob.
"Mosspaw?" A gentle voice called behind them, and they weren't sure if it had come from close by or across the camp. They didn't bother responding, either way.
After a moment or two, their sister hit the ground beside them, leaning into their fur.
"Go away, Ivypaw." They muttered, burying their muzzle into the empty grass. They didn't want to talk to anybody right now. They didn't want to talk to anybody ever again.
Ivypaw didn't go away, instead opting to start grooming their fur. They didn't have the energy to stop them. And… it was a little comforting, anyway. It wasn't as if they'd bothered to do it themself today. The past couple days? They weren't sure.
The pair of them laid in silence like that for a while; Mosspaw with their face hidden in the grass, Ivypaw grooming their fur. They were vaguely aware of the camp buzzing around them, albeit more quietly than usual. No cat seemed to want to disturb them, despite them being the Clan's newly sole medicine cat. Probably because they weren't even old to be their only medicine cat, really.
Mosspaw groaned rolling over without really thinking about it. Ivypaw squeaked, apparently not expecting to be crushed mid-grooming.
"Sorry." Mosspaw mumbled out, shifting to let her up. They could see Ivypaw frowning at them from this position, but they figured it meant she would finally go away.
Instead, they felt teeth sinking into their tail. They sat up quickly with a hiss.
"Ivypaw! Just leave me alone." They huffed, readjusting their woefully crooked glasses.
"You've been lying there for three days. Three days! Don't you think it's time you got up? Maybe ate something?"
Mosspaw blinked. Three days? That was more than they'd thought. They didn't even remember the sun setting that many times.
Before they could blink, it seemed like, Ivypaw was already back with a vole and some soaked moss.
"Go on, eat up. I know you're upset and all, but stars, I was half-expecting actual moss to start growing on you if I didn't intervene."
Mosspaw made a sound that was supposed to sound annoyed, taking a small lap at the moss. And then a bunch more thirsty ones, they hadn't realized how thirsty they'd been. Or how hungry, after eating. They blinked up in thanks at their sister.
"Cool. Now why don't you go for a walk or something? Sniff some herbs or whatever? You were never allowed a break before, why start now?" Ivypaw joked, nudging them to their paws half against their will. "That was a joke, by the way, don't start getting all mad at me."
"I'm not mad." Mosspaw muttered, feeling a tad better despite themself. And besides, they knew Ivypaw was right; they couldn't just lie there forever. They shouldn't, anyway, even if they wanted to.
They gave Ivypaw a side glance. There were still cats worth getting up for. Even if it meant sorting herbs in the medicine den on their own from now on.
They would get used to it, eventually. They had to. For their Clan. Taking care of other cats was the reason they'd chosen this path, wasn't it?
"Ivypaw?" They spoke suddenly; apparently they were already halfway through the camp entrance.
"Mhm?" Ivypaw stopped to look at them, ear twitching.
"You'll come walk with me, won't you?"
Ivypaw smiled, giving them another nudge. "Well, duh, where did you think I was going?"
Mosspaw smiled back a bit, stepping unsteadily outside of camp. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it." Ivypaw chirped, not so subtly stepping closer to their side. "Now come on, I heard there's a beehive in a tree down here somewhere. I'll get us some honey!"
Mosspaw stifled a laugh, following their sister out into the sunlight. And as it warmed their fur and their sister's voice filled their ears, they let themself relax just a bit.
Maybe some things could still feel a little real.
