xxSplices are a parasitic alien species that arrive on Earth as giant larvae, floating through space dormantly until they enter the atmosphere and plummet to the ground. These larvae, upon landing, will choose one or multiple species of animal on Earth to adopt and mimic the DNA and genes of. They do this by collecting strands of hair or other DNA-carrying features (toenails, claws, teeth, bones, etc.) and incorporating them into their genetic makeup. A Splice larvae is not known to harm any animal in this process, and will do its best to remain incognito, as it is very vulnerable in this stage to predators.
xxOnce DNA is collected (typically from just one specimen, but Splice larvae have been recorded adopting up to five different specimen genes!), the larvae will then burrow itself underground and cocoon. These cocoons will lay protected inside the earth for 30+ years. Once the cocoon is fully developed, an adolescent Splice will crawl from its buried place in the ground and emerge on the surface. Upon its surfacing, the Splice will use its adopted features to survive in the habitat chosen, and will reach adulthood approximately 10 years after.
xxThe lifespan of a Splice once it has emerged is typically around 250 years. During this time, the Splice will live off of its environment until it dies of old age. Splices do not breed, or produce eggs or larvae. All larvae were once eggs, however, and are born from a single Splice Queen on the Splice’s home planet. The eggs are sent into space, where they will hatch into larvae, and arrive on Earth.
xxNo one knows why the Splice Queen sends her eggs off into space, but it is discussed that the home planet of the Splice species may not be abundant in resources, and inhabitable to the amount of eggs a single Queen can produce. This, however, is all just speculation. We may never truly know.
