Armenian Gampr dogs are an old and rare landrace breed from Armenia.
Their history goes back up to 15,000 years ago! They even have cave
paintings of them to show just how large a part of their culture they were,
and still are. There are suggestions that these dogs were revered similarly
to how cats in Egypt were.
They are extremely loyal and protective to and of their human and live-
stock charges, but do not think that this means that they are easily led.
They are stubborn if they do not believe your way is truly the best way
to do something. They are very smart, and are independent thinkers,
able to take quick and decisive action.
While they are massive dogs, they are very gentle with young creature,
both human and animal. Bred to guard sheep, goats, and their human
families from wolves, they are not known to be friendly with unknown
dogs, so care must be used. They are very serious dogs, and are not
known to play like most modern dog breeds, but they can let loose
sometimes to have fun.
As a guard dog, you would expect the Armenian Gampr to be an agg-
ressive dog, which indeed they can be, but that is not their first choice.
They will assess the situation, and if aggressive force is not required,
they will not use it. They will not hesitate though, if they decide that
their human or animal charge is in immediate danger.
BuildThe more heavy-set gelkheght tends to be shorter, but stockier than its
hovashoon counterpart, which is tall and leaner.
WeightBoth types tend to weigh the same, with males tending to top off around
130 pounds, and females a little less. This range can be anywhere from
90-140 pounds, however.
HeightMost Gamprs reach 26-30 inches tall at the shoulder
ColorationGamprs come in any natural coloration
CoatGelkheght dogs have a longer, denser coat than the hovashoon, who have
shorter fur on their bodies. Both types have thick fur on their necks, chests,
and around their head.
Ears and TailMay be docked or left natural. In working dogs, the ears and tail are often
cropped short to prevent them from being grabbed by the predators they
are defending against. A torn ear or bitten tail could mean the dog's death,
so their handlers would crop them. You may chose to have them cropped
in any bred dog if you wish, as long as it is within the two-week puppy
phase. Older than this and it becomes impossible. You also may not crop
the ears or tail of imported dogs, as they are already adults. You will be
responsible for a vet fee. Please see the Veterinarian for more info.
BreedingA dog must be an adult to breed and only if they are male and female.
Please see the breeding page for all of the breeding rules.
Spaying and NeuteringYou may decide that your dog's stats are not good enough to pass on to
offspring. In this case, you may pay a veterinarian to spay or neuter them.
If you do this, the dog will gain a significant increase to certain stats.
Depending on their age at the time of the procedure, they may also lose
points in other stats. Please see the Veterinarian for more information.
SurrenderingIf you decide that you no longer want to care for a dog that you adopted,
you must return them to the kennel for retirement or for rehoming,
depending on several factors that will be left up to the Kennel. Please see
the Buy-back Contract page for more information.
If you decide that you no longer want to care for a dog that you bred, you
may sell or trade them to another player, or you may send them to the
Kennel for retirement. Please read the trade thread for more information.
