Arctic elks were originally discovered in the late 1800s as a sub species of rocky mountain elk that had migrated north towards the arctic circle for reasons that are still unknown to this day.
Over time, the elk had bred with species of smaller deer found around the area, thus making Arctic Elk smaller in size and stature. They have also developed a strong Piebald mutation which causes large white patches to appear around the body, providing camouflage and protection from predators.
Average Heights:
↣ Bulls: 4.3 - 4.7ft [at the shoulder]
↣ Cows: 3.8 - 4.3ft [at the shoulder]
Average weights:
↣ Bulls: 500 - 650 lbs
↣ Cows: 400 - 550 lbs
Piebald markings and fur colors:
Different variations can occur within the species. Some can have minimal coverage [only up to the bottom of the belly] and others can be medium/full coverage [leaving small amount of base coat visible]. Piebald can also take form as freckling/ticking but more commonly will these elk have solid white markings around their belly, neck, haunches, and face.
base coats will consist of blondes, browns, chestnut, light gray, dark gray, black variations! It can be any shade of these colors as long as it stays natural! No known mutations have been discovered but its not to say that they're not out there!
