Soundbytes are a canine-like species, ranging from the size of a housecat to a large fox. When they're pups, they bond to a sound- in the wild, these are typically bird calls or rushing water, while in captivity, they prefer music, though they've been known to bond to car horns, keyboard typing, or even the sound of their owner's voices. After they bond to their sound of choice, Soundbyte pups grow a velvety layer of fur on the inside of their ears, meant specially to detect their bonded sound. Bonded sounds have been known to cheer soundbytes up and make them more energetic, but rumors have been spread that bonded sounds can heal or even reverse ageing in some Soundbytes. Bonded sounds also effect the coloration of Soundbytes, with higher pitched melodies resulting in lighter coloration and lower pitches having darker coloration.
