In the war of Bec de Sang, thousands of draft horses were used by the Lunebec people to carry riders into battle, bravely defending their home from the invaders: but they were no match for the mechanical weapons of the opponents, and soon the horses' population began to wither. With extra armor they were too slow... Without that armor horses were almost guaranteed to be shot down... And regardless, draft horses were susceptible to gas bombs. Enemy forces were getting stronger by the minute. It seemed as if there was no hope- until one day, a kindhearted Lunebec man traveled deep into the forest to search for herbs, but found a fosl instead. It was the biggest foal he'd ever seen. Several feet tall at the shoulder, it could easily pass for a full-grown horse! The foal seemed to be abandoned so he took it home with him... And used the last of his food supplies to nurture it. He went to sleep that night with an empty stomach but a heart full of gladness, for he now had a friend in these waning days of their civilization.
When the man woke that morning he nearly died of shock. Outside his door was a massive beast, taller than the shack he lived in, towering over him like a walking tree: the foal pranced off to its mother, who stood there unmoved. Eyes were glowing in the dark forest behind her. Several more horses emerged from the gloom- they were thankful the foal hadn't been harmed while it was lost. But that Lunebec man looked deep into the horses' eyes and saw deadness. Their forest was being destroyed by the invaders, and soon the very ground they stood on would be nothing but ashes; to defeat the enemy man and beast would have to ally themselves.
The horses were brave fighters by nature. They wore heavy armor and bone plating as they went into battle, and the enemy's encroaching forces came to a standstill, then began to recede- the fastest of the horses wore only bone plating and carried out ambushes and rescues. After years of hard battle the enemy fell- but by then the Lunebec man who'd saved the foal died of old age, and the horses' bravery and sacrifice was forgotten by the next generation of people. So the Skullbanes went back to their forest... Partly domesticated... And sometimes, individuals will emerge from there to travel into the realm of humans, silent guardians in the night, occasionally bonding with particular humans like their ancestors so long ago.
