notes:
When shading or highlighting, never use grayscale, unless its on a grayscale character. Always use lighter or darker variations of a colour. For a warm feel, use reds, yellows, oranges. Cooler lighting, use blues.
On my colour swatch there, I used a brown base. I then put an add layer over the top, used the same brown, and used an airbrush/soft eraser to soften the edges. The darker part was on a multiply layer, also with a soft eraser/airbrush.

For paws, use references (I didn't and they didn't turn out well lol). look at joints, and how animals stand. Don't forget the dewclaw!
