Here's my entry for this competition, I definitely had a lot of fun creating this design! I know it seems a bit bland color-wise, I just wanted to get the lines perfect first♥ (The details can further be refined if needed ^^)
The concept is that since the kaisho maintain the balance of life and death, they're most commonly in a deep state of focus on those in which they maintain. It is only when one is either brought into the world, or departs from it, that the kaisho open their eye and give off a radiant glow, thus distracting the soul from what is truly taking place. (ie, "bright light" reports) The truth is that the kaisho store the souls within their wings into a vast expanse of endless space, only bringing them out or receiving them again when needed. The souls only know peace in their realm. (Sorry if I went too in-depth with background, I just got a bit carried away at the concept ^^)
Another small detail- the three long tails protruding from it are indicative of life, death, and the relationship between the two.
