So im not the word of god obviously, but a big tip is to shade with color, not with black !! black tends to muddy out colors while shading with colors can keep the look looks of your color !!
what I tend to do is instead of shading on another layer, i'll take the color, darken / desaturate it slightly and make it slightly more blue, and shade directly onto the color layers !! this won't work for pieces with a lot of gradients, and in that case I recommend taking a color that fits your palette's aesthetic and setting it to some sort of darkening setting to get yourself some shading !!
just have fun with shading !! as long as theres a general idea of where the light is coming from, you should be fine !!
