How to draw an Anthro Cat

Postby Ki-Mono » Sat Mar 02, 2019 12:08 pm

I hope this helps. I don't really know if your character was a cat or not, so I just made a guess.
I wrote most of my general tips on the picture, but basically I recommend starting out with reference studies. I actually did that myself in order to make this. That basically means looking up real pictures of cats and people to figure out how to body is supposed to look. For this drawing, I looked up "Cat Side View" and "Man Side View" and then drew up the "realistic sketch.
Once you feel comfortable drawing something the way it's supposed to be drawn, you can then draw it in a more stylized way. Example, mine has bigger eyes, smaller ears, a longer neck, a smaller torso and body etc.
Never put yourself in a box, but in order to develop a style you actually enjoy and feel like you can do anything with: you fist have to find the box. Does that make sense?

I challenge you to try it right now. Look up a picture of a cat, and draw it to the best of your ability in 1 minute. Draw lightly, and use rough shapes. This will give you the general idea of how the shape and feel of a cat should be.
From there you can add more detail etc, but this is the first step.

I had a art teacher a while ago that gave me this advice: "When drawing from an image, you should be looking at the image just as much as you're looking at the paper you are drawing on."
It may sound crazy, but this is actually really good advice and needs to be done!
I recommend doing this traditionally at first, but you may do it digitally as well if you like. I can't stop you obviously lol.

I hope this all makes sense. I was watching a documentary while watching this, and it's hard to listen and write lol.
I'm willing to help and give more advice if you'd like.
