Welcome!
ANNOUNCEMENT: Artist competition is up! Good luck <3 Also, I'm searching for affiliations.
This lovely place is the Fancy Tegu Adoption Center! Here we find homes for Fancy Tegus both old and new. You'll find this a place of sanctuary for these lovely creatures.
What is a "Fancy Tegu"?
Fancy Tegus are quite similar in anatomy to the more common "Argentine Red Tegu". They are a breed of highly intelligent lizards able to process forms of affection displayed by humans if raised form a young age. Fancy Tegu are incredibly friendly, trumping even the Argentine Red in tameness. They have "beaded" scales, this is rarely seen in lizards now.
Fancy Tegu are in fact a branch from the Tegu family, a crossbreed of a of small breed of dragon and Tegu. This results in their incredibly diverse colouration, variations, larger size, dog-like tameness and capability for noises no regular Tegu could make. In fact, the Fancy Tegu can mimic nearly any noise- a Fancy Tegu may even hold a conversation with you! This, of course is usually out of the question for wild Fancy Tegu who haven't interacted with humans much.
The Fancy Tegu will eat just about anything; but as with most Tegu they require a rather pricey and diverse diet. This usually means:
-Fish (be sure to give them a verity!)
-Bone
-Other meats (Duck, beef, pork ect.)
-Fruits (Careful- some are poisonous!)
-Berries (Careful- some are poisonous!)
(You can also feed them veggies, but most dislike this and Fancy Tegus can do without)
(Fancy Tegus can snack on almost anything in small quantities!)
Adult Fancy Tegu should be fed once every other day. Another thing worth mentioning is Fancy Tegu are highly individualistic and picky eaters. One Tegu may love salmon and hate cherries, another may hate fish and love cherries! Regardless, they do require all of the foods listed above to survive. Calcium dust is typically your friend when feeding a picky Tegu.
Fancy Tegu can reach 7ft-5ft long, females rarely cap 6ft males easily make it to 7ft. Males tend to be brighter in colouration, with larger jowls.
Fancy Tegus require a large amount of humidity (70-90%!) and a steady amount of UVB light. Failure to provide proper UVB lighting will result in your Tegu being unable to absorb nutrients where as failing to provide proper humidity will result in shedding problems.
Fancy Tegus will become aggressive/"wild" if not handled enough at a young age. They seek human affection in captivity and are very curious creatures. It is not recommended to keep them as "view only" pets. While it may take a while to truly gain their trust, it is well worth it.
Morphs
Albinism- The Fancy Tegu Does not produce Melanin, a type of pigment. This makes them sensitive to light. Understandably, this can be a cruel morph for Tegus, as a result these will be very few in total. Tegus with albinism will be in pain, resulting in "bad moods" regardless, these can be just as sweet as the rest.
Piedbald/Leucism- The Fancy Tegu is deficient in some pigments, causing white skin/ white skin and patches of pigment. The eyes of a leucistic Fancy Tegu will be unaffected. They can also be slightly light sensitive, but is in no way as severe as albinism.
Melanism- The Fancy Tegu creates allot of pigment, resulting in an extremely dark appearance. Melanistic Fancy Tegu may get overheated, but can afford a faster metabolism.
