Welcome to the Brindled Highland Gypsy Drums. Here we strive to catch, breed, and adopt out the best of the best BHGDs known to mankind. Adoption is simple; just scroll through the thumbnails, find a horse with the "adopt me!" sign, and fill out the form for it!

A few updates:

Yes, I have indeed remade the mascot of BHGD, only because I was fixing some of the lining layers and such.
I have finally decided that any rarity of horse can be made now by our artists, the rarity of each horse only meaning how rarely that color, brindle positioning, or brindle color is seen in BHGDs. The only color of coat or brindle color I would not like to see too often though are tricolor/chimera or paints as I would like to keep those rarest.
Secondly, I have also decided to allow any color of coat, brindle, or brindle position in the making of customs, only excluding tricolors/chimera and paints. This does not mean that you may order a rare BHGD every time, as I have restricted them to 1 rare BHGD may be ordered every 2 other time you order a custom and uncommons every other time. Meaning, you may order a common, then uncommon, then rare, then possibly another uncommon, then common again. I would like for it to work that way, hopefully. If I find you abusing the system in some form, you will have your BHGDs stripped from you, put up for readoption, and you may never adopt or order a BHGD again.
I have also changed up some of the forms.
Another thing I have decided is that in this standing moment of time, I have reserved only 4 legendary BHGDs to be put up for adoption to the public, and the other 5 to be owned by artists, as we also handle the horses and share a connection with these animals above the normal equestrian.
And lastly, I will be catching up the 2 customs I have not yet done and will be open for more, as well as posting 1 or 2 more FCFS along with a few normal adopts (maybe even a rare in there somewhere.)
Artists, I will talk to you lovelies on Skype about other updates. (;

The history of the BHGD

Postby cowgirlchrista » Thu Jan 01, 2015 2:00 am

Image
Brindled Highland Gypsy Drums originated in northern Alaska and Canada around the 16th century. They were bred with Gypsy Vanners and Drum Horses by Indian tribes, but didn't seem to really inherit the paint genes very commonly. Instead, they adapted a brindling similar to striping along the midsection, and sometimes the legs, neck, and very rarely the face. This breed was originally bred for wars between rival tribes, only the best of the best put to use. They were intended to carry men across the harsh, cold tundra quickly, and be strong enough to carry supplies and agriculture when and where it was needed. As the natives began to travel south slowly and progressively, they also brought their horses with them. During the Westward Expansion, as Indian tribes were overtaken and destroyed, the Gypsy Drum horses would spook and run. The drafts eventually made their way back north towards the lands where they originated. Luckily, no BHGD was miraculously taken by pioneers of the American West. A few hundred years later, in the late 1980's, a few archaeologists headed to northern Canada in search of relics and ruins of the Indian tribes that once lived there. Instead, they found the giant draft breed of the legendary Brindled Highland Gypsy Drums in a remote part of the tundra, and breeding in secluded herds. The horses were thought to be a myth as no skeletons were found to support the evidence of them ever even existing. The men reported the finding of the horses to the Canadian government, and the drafts began to quickly gain attention again after hundreds of years. Some of the horses were left on reservations protected by the government to roam free, while only about 50 were brought back for research and for use as breeding stock. Eventually, specific stud books and ranches for the breed were established and the breed became more popular as working horses. To control the wild population, Canada occasionally does round ups much like they do with mustangs and adopted them out. Some ranches even have permits to catch new horses for their blood lines or to be trained and adopted out to new homes, but there were only a few farms whom were able to do this.

Temperament and characteristics
BHGDs tend to have very gentle-giant like temperaments and usually don't put up much of any fight, not being known to have a snappy attitude or to harm humans. They stand anywhere from about 17.1 hh to a sky-high size of 20.2 hh, though the tallest recorded was 21.3 hh. The mares usually weigh around 1500 lbs to about 1800 lbs, and the males reach anywhere form 1700 lbs to 1900 lbs. The mares have a normal pregnancy span like any draft mare; about 10 months. The foals usually finish growing and filling out at about 3 years old, and begin weaning from their mothers about a year after their birth.

Rules

Postby cowgirlchrista » Thu Jan 01, 2015 2:01 am

As much as I don't want to, I have to put these into action here guys, just in case. Now, onto the rules:

    • No whining, complaining, or being annoying if you don't win a horse. Believe me, there will be plenty.
    • You are allowed a max of 3 breedings a month, each month.
    • You get 3 warnings. After 3 warnings, you are no longer allowed to adopt, own, or breed BHGDs any longer and yours will be taken and put up for readoption.
    • If you order a custom, you may not order anything above a common. I only enforce this rule because uncommons will be posted by artists or bred randomly and will be posted as often as possible. We don't want the rare horses to become common.
    • There is no limit on how many BHGDs you may own, but try not to adopt them all, please.
    • Halters with chestpieces are only added on horses that are owned. Horses for adoption that are tame will have a halter with a lead over its shoulder, and horses that are completely not tame will not have a halter. These competitions may require you to write a short story about how you tamed them, require many pieces of art, etc.
    • Artists must message me first before creating a rare or higher.
    • Have fun and enjoy the freedom!

Rules for breedings:
-You are allowed 3 breedings a month.
-The rarity of a BGHDs brindling and color does not usually depend on the parents, though commonly it does.
-No inbreeding. Meaning you can't breed a sister & a brother, father & daughter, mother & son, and so on, so forth. As long as they are 2 or more generations apart may you do this.

Rules for customs:
Currently open/closed.
-You may only order 2 customs each time they are open. This is to limit the amount coming in at a time so we artists don't get overwhelmed. We all tend to get caught up in other adoptables, life, and schoolwork sometimes.
-You may order nothing over a common BHGD. This is to keep the common brindling common, common colors common, and uncommons as uncommons and so on, so forth.
-Currently, there is no cost to order a custom as they are free for the moment. As the adoptable begins to grow, we may add a payment.
