So... yeah. It represents Japanese and Oriental culture as a whole. The character on the long, Tibet-styled fan is "sakura", meaning "cherry blossom". I find the red ribbon to represent China and Chinese New Year and the silver bell is Japanese-styled. The swirls are based off of zen garden patterns I saw in Japan.
Obviously, the main theme of the design is the sakura blossom, which is quite Japanese. I tried to keep it simple. >.< I feel like I overdid it, but whatever.
Yes, that is a fail sakura on her haunch. XD
If I do win the artist competition and become an artist/guest artist, I'd love to keep this KKI design... I love her so much, regardless of my fail art skills! ;^;
