Image What is a Mippi? Image

Mippi is a small hyperactive mammal closely related to pikas. The name 'Mippi' originates from the high pitched 'meep' sound they use to communicate with each other. Their body are short, covered in long dense fur to keep them warm in their cold tundra-like habitat. The horns on their head are covered in velvety fur and generally not harmful as they only use these to protect themselves in the nature. Mippis are naturally very social, living in a group of at least 2 individuals [though a group of 20+ are not a rare sight!], and help each other build a series of underground burrow to sleep in, raise their young, and hoard food for winter; such as grass hay, grains and seeds. Because of their fun and loving personality and small size, they are very popular amongst people who do not have much space for larger pet. Would you like to adopt one today?

Species Information

Postby kavlri » Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:28 am

Image Species Information Image

General Information
Common Name: Mippi
Scientific Name: ???
Conservation Status: Least concern
Size: 15-25 cm. from nose to rump
120-400 g.
Habitat: Tundra border
Diet: Various grass hay, grains,
seeds, wild berries, moss, and lichen

    Physical Attributes
Body of the Mippis are short and round, but muscular for long distance running and digging. They don't have any tail to prevent heat loss, and simply because they have no use for them; they mainly live on flat ground or in their burrow. Their head is round with long pointy snout, suitable for carrying a lot of hay back to their burrow. Inside the mouth holds their ever-growing gnawing incisors, premolars, and molars. Fur on the head isn't as long as the body, but still soft and slightly fluffy. Fur starts to get thicker around their oval-shaped sensitive ears which sets low to make space for the horns. The horns are hard but covered in velvety fur; Mippis use this only to defend themselves from hawks and foxes. The nose look very similar to rabbits, and very sensitive to smell. Their large almond shaped eyes are set a little more forward than Pikas, and are commonly solid in colour. Odd eyes may occur, but only occasionally. Their legs, both front and back, are long, muscular, and furry, very similar to rabbits.

    Behaviour
Mippis are very social and usually prefers to live in a large group consisting of at least 4 to 20 individuals. Most members of the group are related, though unrelated Mippis are accept into the group from time to time. In some occasion, a pair might separate out from their family and set up a group of their own. Every member have roles in their group; all of them would help each other gather food, digging burrow to live in and take turns in raising their youngs.

The burrow they construct are relatively complex and organised. Each tunnel would lead to different 'rooms', with 'bedroom' and 'baby room' in the deepest and most secure part of the burrow. The burrow are at least 60cm. deep into the ground, though most are around 1.5-2 m., with exits that are only 5-7cm. in diameter. There are typically 6-10 exits in each burrow so that the Mippi can easily hide when in danger. The burrow is also used to hoard their food in preparation for the upcoming winter, since Mippis do not hibernate during that time.

Mippis use sound as their main way of communication. They would 'talk' to each other using high pitched 'Meep' sound, most of which are out of human's hearing range. This helps them work as a team and warn each other of potential threads. They also use their smell, not only to identify different Mippis from each other, it also use to detect sickness, fear and whether or not they are ready to breed.

In general, Mippis are hyperactive and interactive. They would rarely sits still for long before they find something else to do. They are also intelligent; they'll learn things in only a few trials. In captivity, they can be a very rewarding pet, like rats and rabbits, once they bond to you. They might be skittish at first, but because of their social nature, they'd consider you a member of their group become very tame in no time!

    Life stage
Baby Mippis are born furred and eyes open, like guinea pigs, and have an appearance of a smaller version of adult Mippis. They could run and eat within half an hour, though they are still dependent on their parents' protection. Their fur will grow up to their full coat when they are a month old, which is when they're ready to live on their own.

Most Mippis are considered adult when they are 5 months old, though some may take 7 or more months to be fully mature. Before that time, they'll grow up very fast, and consume more food than adult Mippis. This makes most wild babies born around the start of summer when food are plentiful.

When they are around 4-5 years old, they are considered senior. Mippis at this age are slower, less active, and tend to have thinner coat than younger individuals. A typical lifespan of Mippis are around 6 years. In nature their livespan would be much shorter compare pet Mippi, because of predation and disease. However, they may live considerably longer if they receive proper care from their owner.

Image Species FAQ Image

If you have any question that is not answered in the FAQ section, please feel free to ask here in this thread ^^

How can I become an artist/moderator?

I'm planning to manage the species by myself for the time being, but in the future I'll start hiring people if these get popular enough. I'd probably choose who'll become a mod, but for artists I might be open an artist competition [either form base or oekaki design base].
When will there be a new Mippi UFA?

I'll design one [or multiple] when I have the time and design ideas, so I cannot give an exact time for that :3 You just have to be patience
Can Mippis be other species' pet?

I would say yes :3 In terms of their personality and intelligence they're somewhere around a rabbit and a rat, so I don't see why they can't be a JBD/Kia/JMD/whatever's pet
Can I pay you ____ to make me a custom?

No. Customs are only reserve for friends and staffs only. You cannot order one.

Breeding

Postby kavlri » Tue Jul 23, 2013 5:29 am

Image Breeding Information Image

After Mippis are considered adult, they are ready to breed. In nature most Mippis would only breed in summer when food are not scarce, but in captivity they can be bred all year round. Mippis do not mate for life, though some might choose to stay with the same breeding partner for a while.
The gestation period of Mippis are around 30 days, and each litter could range from 1-3 pups, with 2 being the most common. The offsprings will look more or less like their parents or their ancestors. Identical twins are not known to occur in this species.
