Mary Ann wrote:Well, I was once at church when I was called up to speak, and I was wonderful! Then, the next day, there it was!

"I-I grew up on the streets. An orphan living hoof to mouth, stealing was all I knew to do. I was good at it too! But, one year, things got particuarly bad...Shop owners became more vigilant, I started getting caught nearly every time! I was either going to starve to death or someone was going to kill me! I-I was desperate...and I knew the church had plenty of money in their donation box...so I stole from it. Just a little! Enough to buy food for a week or so...
But I was caught again.
A priest started chasing after me, but aside from his initial "Stop!" he never said another word...like he didn't want to call attention to the chase. It wasn't long before he had me cornered. I dropped everything I had been carrying, bits scattering everywhere, and immediately started apologizing, begging him not to hurt me...He simply collected the bits and asked me to come with him.
"It's okay, I promise." His voice was so soft, my fears almost completely melted away as he lead be back to the church.
He deposited the stolen bits back in the dontation box and asked me if I needed a place to stay. When I told him yes, he assured me that everything I needed would be provided for me as long as I needed it. I cant explain it, but I felt safe there. Safer than I've ever felt in my life. And I felt the need to spread this feeling of safety to others.
When he led me to my room and brought me some warm bread and soup, I made my decision.
"Father?" I asked, hesitating because there was a possibility he'd say 'no', "C-could I stay here? I mean...Could I stay and become a Priest like you? C-can you teach me?"
He smiled and told me that it would take a very long time, but he would be happy to take me under his wing. The happiness I felt hearing that made my heart soar!
But then he asked a question I couldn't really answer, "But what is your name, child?"
"I...I never really had one. No one cared to call me more than 'Whelp' or 'stupid brat'..."
He smiled sadly, his strange eyes showing a sense of knowing, "I see...Well, do you feel sorry for the crimes you've needed to commit in the past?"
"Yes..."
"Do you ask the Princesses to forgive you?"
"Yes, of course."
"Good. Then what would you say to the name Penitent. Or perhaps Dismas?"
I smiled, "I like them, Father...Penitent."
"Then that shall be your name."
The next day, we began my teachings. Father Cross Promise was right...it took a very long time. It took six or seven months just for me to know enough to be accepted into the religion! But it was worth it. Years passed and I finally became a brother, a Missionary of the church. And it was during my induction ceremony that my cutie mark appeared. It resembled Father Cross' in a way. And that made me smile.
I'm still working to become a full fledged Priest, and I won't ever give up! Spreading the word of the Princesses, of love, kindness, and safety, is my calling in this life...and I promise to do my very best. ♥
