How does an apprentice[Mousepaw] mate with a warrior[Sandstream]?

Obviously they wouldn't 'mate' til he was a warrior, but it is possible for a warrior and an apprentice to be in love.
For example, Fernpaw and Dustpelt.

Furthermore, Mousepaw is actually old enough to be a warrior, but due to varying circumstances that I might go into eventually, he hasn't been given his warrior ceremony(and probably won't for some time).
