The Wishing Fish
The boat floated precariously on the hot lava, threatening to tip any second and dump Darren into his death. Darren shuddered at the thought and rowed on. He was headed for the center of the lava lake, where the famed Widgeons, wish granting fishes, lived. Darren had been called a fool many a times for believing in Widgeons, which most took to be simply a fools tale. But Darren knew they existed; knew they resided in the burning lava of Lake Frisch. Darren rowed to a stop in the center of the lake and reached down to grab a fishing pole. The pole, like Darren's boat, was made of a strong metal that would not melt in the burning hot lava. Darren casted the pole and waited patiently. He had baited the line with fire fish, which he hoped would attract the Widgeons to come near. Darren's thoughts drifted while he waited. Lake Frisch had been discovered only a couple years before, and the cause of many unknown deaths, one of which had been Darren's sister. She had come out on a boat and had mysteriously vanished, never to be seen again. Multiple others had meet the same fate, and the lake had been cordoned off, only used by the scientists who studied the things that resided in the lava. It was then that Darren felt a tug on his line. He reeled it in and watched as a fish splashed out of the lava, a look of surprise on its face. Darren set down his pole and picked up the fish. It was rather large, and it seemed to give Darren a large glare.
“Don't you have any respect? You fool!” the fish shouted. Darren looked surprisingly at the fish.
“Y-you can talk?” Darren asked incredulously.
“Well of course I can! What kind of a wishing fish would I be if I couldn't? Now, let me back into the lava and I might not kill you.”
“I've captured you though. You owe me a wish.”
“Fine! Just get it over with!”
“I wish that I could be reunited with my sister.” The wishing fish gave Darren a concerned look.
“You sure that's what you want? I don't see a very good outcome.”
“Just grant my wish,” Darren growled. He was losing his patience with the irritating fish. The fish shrugged and glowed a bright golden color for a moment.
“Granted, now let me go!” Darren threw the fish back into the lava and wondered of the fish had told the truth. Would he really see his sister again? Suddenly, a large wave hit Darren's boat. It rocked wildly before upending Darren into the lava. Darren let out a yell and closed his eyes. But….the lava didn't burn. It tingle lightly on his skin, enveloping him in a little bubble like cocoon. Darren opened his eyes and found that he could see well, down to the bottom. Fishes and such darted everywhere, just like a regular body of water. Darren swam downwards, finding little resistance from the lava. A shape appeared out of the lava and it moved towards Darren. When it got closer, Darren saw that it was a beautiful woman in a long white dress. She smiled at him before grabbing his hand and pulling him forward toward the bottom of the lava lake. “I'm going to see Lana!” Darren thought excitedly. He couldn't wait to see his sister, who had beam missing for the past five years. The woman leading Darren stopped and turned to smile at him. It was then that Darren noticed she had sharp, serrated teeth. Her hair had began to wiggle and squirm; turning into small snakes. Darren swam backwards, horrified. He turned only to discover that he was surrounded by more snake haired woman. Darren glanced downward and gasped at what he had not seen earlier: many bodies, tethered to the ground by long chains. One of them had a face similar to Darren's; it was his sister Lana, dead for a long time. Darren screamed as death closed in.
A little whiles away, a wishing fish heard the scream and shuddered. He had been granting wishes for many generations, and they never turned out well. The wishers had all met a terrible end, some just like that of Darren's; tethered to the ground and lost forever, their faces still frozen in horror.
A little story. Hope everything gets better soon @Ranger of the North!
