What is an avatar? Can you show me a few examples?

@Dragon lady -- an avatar is basically the image displayed over your username.
here is an example;;

the original image was just the cat, but then i added the flower crown and cropped it into a circle.
it's basically adding effects to an image [if you want] and cropping it into a shape [again, if you want].
anyone can use this ^^
