Niko carefully looked around him to ensure he was alone. Confirming he was, without a doubt, by himself, he scrabbled down the rough gravel pavement hill.
It was Father's Day, and Niko knew the perfect gift. He wasn't very old, only 6 at the time, but what he did know was that his mother wasn't there anymore, and she wasn't there because she had Niko. Her name was Lily. His dad, whom Niko called "Jackadad," loved her very much, and her death tore him apart. Jackson vowed to protect and be the greatest father he could be to Niko.
Now, Niko was gathering some of the wild lilies that grew in a clearing in the woods outside their house.
Lots of dry grass and crawling bugs scraped at Niko's paws, but he didn't really mind. He was on a mission- Operation Best Dad Day Ever.
After a good hour or so of walking, he finally came across a patch of calla lilies. Taking hold of the small flowers in his mouth, he gave them a gentle tug, and when they didn't come out, he yanked them out roughly and fell backwards from the force. Standing up and brushing the dirt off, he realized he had no idea where he was. Niko paniced for a bit, then remembered his father's words. "Always look for clues, even when it looks like they aren't there."
Niko glanced around him quickly, scanning for possible things that could help him.
Suddenly, he spotted a little pile of gravel. Lighting up with excitement, Niko remembered that walking on the asphalt path in the beginning of the forest has loosened a lot of gravel, catching it in his paws. and he had been constantly having to shake his paws to get it off. He bounded down the trail of gravel, lilies in mouth, carefully trying to keep them as intact as possible.
Out of breath, Niko stopped and panted a little before gently pushing the back door of the house open, as to not disturb his father. Softly closing the door, he saw his father watching some saturday morning cartoons. Sneaking into the living room, still slightly red from his early morning run, Niko rapidly tapped on Jackson's shoulder. Jackson turned around, startled.
"Y-yes?" Realizing it was his son, a smile sprouted on his face.
"Happy Father's Day," Niko said shyly, a small grin on his face as well.

The sun was shining through the windows of a small, quaint house. Inside, a kalon lay on a rug watching the TV intently. It was only set on a cartoon channel, but he seemed to be enjoying himself anyhow, so much, in fact, that he didn't even notice when his son walked through the door. Because of this, he was easily startled when a small started paw poking his shoulder in quick succession. Turning quickly, he begun to calm down once he noticed that the paw actually belonged to his son and his face lit up with a smile. This child was his world. It had been nearly 6 years now sense his wife had died in a terrible accident and he he had become the sole caretaker of the sweet little boy. He still missed her horribly, but Nikoden had done wonders for filling the void left in his heart.
As he pulled himself away from his thoughts, he noticed that his son was holding his hands behind his back. Curiosity filled him and his smiled turned playful. "What you got there, Niko? Is it something for your dear old dad? Do I get to see it?" he said, laughing, as he pulled the kid close. When his son confirmed that it had been for him and asked him to close his eyes, he complied instantly and held out his paws. He might have forgotten it was Father's Day, but it seemed his son had remembered. When Niko finally told him to open his eyes, he sat staring at the objects in his paws with an unreadable expression. "Niko...these are for me?" he asked, trying to keep back the tears as he looked at the lilies. His wife had been named Lily, and Nico knew that... had he got these in memory of her? When his son confirmed that yes, they were to honor the memory of his mother, the tears came uncontrollably and he pulled the boy into a hug. "Thank you, Niko. I think this is the second nicest gift I ever received." he sniffled, trying to dry his eyes. He laughed a bit through his tears when his child made a face and asked what the nicest gift has been. "You, of course- what else would it be?" he answered with a proud smile. "Why don't you do find a vase for these? I think they'd look lovely sitting in the table near the window. Then we can go and do something together, just you and me." he added, turning off the TV as the child ran off with a smile.
Yes, he thought, watching as his son shuffled through the cabinets for a vase, these flowers
were nice and very touching, but Niko really was the best gift he had ever received.
