Taming entry; (written by Ieorthil and her older brother, Cavanash "Ash" Alenara, to his sweetheart, Illia Eldinn)
Dear Illia,
Today was quite a day. Mother sent Ieorthil off with the dogs to fetch a few yards of cloth from town, and she came back with a dragon and no cloth. Mama says that her scatterbrained personality will soften with age, but she is already five summers and just as forgetful as last year! Will she never change?
--several lines are scratched out, with blobs and smears of ink where the author did not let it finish drying--
She told me that the scrawny little thing "picked her". Whatever that means. All I know is that it's another mouth to feed. Ieorthil can't keep her hands to herself. I bet that dragon is stolen, and the town guards are going to hunt us down and arrest us, all because my greedy sister can't do one simple task-
--the paper is torn here, and a little crumpled, as if someone with sticky fingers grabbed the page and ran off with it--
Ash never lets me write to you anymore, Illia! I miss you a lot. I remember we used to play guard together, and how much Ash would stammer when you spoke to him! I found a dragon - he's very splotchy, but I like him, even though he likes books too much. I almost ripped this note when I got it away from Ash, and he would have screamed if I tore it! The edges are only a little bit bent. --a crude drawing of a girl sticking out her tongue is barely legible here-- So today I found a dragon - in the market, of all places! Mama sent me with Toby, our dog, to buy some cloth from the vendors. (I'm old enough to help with the work now, Mama says so, even if Ash rolls his eyes at me.) Toby and I were minding our own business, I was trying to get the vendor to notice me, when all of a sudden Toby sets up a racket and darts off into the crowd. I got down on my hands and knees and followed him, Mama's pouch of money around my neck. Finally I caught that dumb dog outside of the library - you should have seen it, Illia! Rows upon rows of books, bound with bright colors and pretty trinkets. It was wonderful!
Anyway, I told Toby that we couldn't go inside, that the things in there were too expensive. However, that was when the little dragon I told you about landed on my shoulder - Toby went berserk! He jumped on me and tried to bite the little creature. To his credit, the dragon hissed valiantly at a dog more than four times his size. It was then that-
Oh! Mama's calling for supper! I guess I'll tell you the rest of the story later. Ash'll want to write again. See you soon!
Your friend,
Ieorthil
Gods, she's annoying. Quick, I'll hastily write while she's eating her supper with that new dragon of hers. It's not even a dragon, Illia - you should see it! A small pink rat, that's what it is. --the paper is blackened here--
Ow! The dragon can apparently understand me. The page got a little burnt, but hopefully you will still get it. I miss you. Thanks for always being there for my family, Illia.
All my love,
Cavanash Alenara
What is this dragons favorite book and why?; Hemingway's favorite book is a small, unbound leather volume filled with Ieorthil's mother's loveletters, sent by Ieorthil's father when they were courting. At first, Ieorthil's mother was loathe to let the little dragon have it, afraid he would destroy the surviving memories of her late husband, but he seemed to get the importance of the document and now guards it fiercely. Ieorthil's mother is glad to have such a valiant guardian keeping watch over the last few words she has of her husband.
