Upon arriving in this new ground,
I scraped my paws around.

To my right, a sparkling blue oasis
where prey are a-drinkling.
To my left, the gentle sway
of the winds of May.
In front, a colossal collection
of tiny, beads, in a scattered position.
To my back, I turn away,
away, from the waterless bay.

I will still remember,
the joyful moments of Septembers,
eternally frozen, in place and time,
bound forever with the ribbons of rhymes,

a loving face but now gone,
a gentle hand but missing still is,
a smooth voice that was thine
a fragile mouth that never harm a sense,
a steady foot that walked of
a beating heart full of righteousness

I will still love you forever,
even when I die,
I would go through 7 hells,
I would go through torture,

May or may not enter; I have like a hundred projects to work on, and yet...

Once, there had been hope.

The cat had heard the stories, memorised them by heart. Their tribe's leader had made sure of that. "It is important," she'd said, "to know of the past, if we are to prepare for the future." They had accepted this easily enough, outwardly. Inwardly? They were next to bursting with doubt.

There were whispers that the leader was beginning to go insane - by right, she should have been long retired. She was more than old enough. She had resisted the idea, though. "I am strong enough; I am wise enough. There is no reason I should not rule. Unless, that is, someone here is conspiring to take my place." And she had looked suspiciously around, gazing in turn at each member of the tribe. Her eyes had been piercing, and her words sharp; none dared object.

She insisted upon her foolish ideas of love, of joy - of hope. The cat had nothing against any of these, per se, but the leader held them above all else. She refused to let them kill a traitor, because they had to be "merciful". They gave up a chunk of their prey each day to the old and useless because it would be "cruel" to kick them out. Others' scraps couldn't be scavenged because it was "dishonourable". She wanted the tribe to die all because of false ideals.

The cat raised their head, squinting against the harsh sunlight that made their sensitive eyes ache. They, of all cats, had to be put on morning duty. With a soft hiss, they closed their eyes, letting their other senses lead the way as they walked idly down the stone path.

Even as familiar as they were with it, they were not immune to missteps. Occasionally, they felt the unsteady movement of pebbles, hard and rough, underneath them. When that happened, they quickly shifted their paws to rest on the long, smooth rocks that sketched out the path. They had never been sure just what it led to - nobody was, to be completely honest. They were told of monsters - huge ones, furless but for hideous nests on their heads.

The cat allowed their thoughts to wander back to their tribe's leader. A fool she was, but a stubborn fool, with an extraordinary penchant for fighting. It was not just her desire for happiness that made her such - she was outright delusional. She spoke sometimes of humans; gentle and kind. "They helped our people," she claimed. "They... they gave us food and shelter, better than our own cave. They kept the predators away. They..." She would inevitably get cut off by something, one way or another, before she finished describing much of them.

They listened to the keening of a lovebird somewhere, distraught over its mate's death. (They thought of their own parent, passionate and stoic as he was torn painfully apart by foxes.) They breathed the scent of blood as, far away, the tribe's hunters pounced desperately on all the food they could find. (They thought of hunger and pain, a sandy brown kitten hoping badly - so badly - that some prey would stumble into their path.) They opened their eyes and saw a doe a mile from where they stood, an injured child in tow. (They thought of relief when at last they were taken in by a bright-eyed queen.)

Then they paused, perfectly still, and turned back, striding back into the cave with their head high and their spirits light. They owed the leader an apology.

Once, there had been hope, and now it bloomed again in the heart of a warrior.

Totally takes place in the same 'verse of the thrush story a while back.
