- The first thing she noticed was a faint burning sensation. It was bubbling along her back, her arms, her legs, her face, her ears - anywhere that didn’t seem to be covered by clothing, and even that was quite warm. But wait, why was she so hot? Her cottage never reached anything of this degree; she’d be inside or in the shade if it did. Maybe she fell out of a tree? No, she couldn’t - could she? Even if she could, that didn’t explain the searing heat.
Out of curiosity, she popped an eye open. Above her was a plain blue sky and a bright ball of Sun glaring down. Deciding squinting would save her some trouble, she sat up, surprised to find her arms shaking with the effort. None of this was making much sense, even a fall out of a tree wouldn’t warrant this much pain. And then it struck her - a plain blue sky, but there should be treetops and leaf canopies.
Her head turned quickly, issuing another sort of pain throughout her neck, and the memories of the past day and a half returned quicker than she could sanely process. Those hybrids, and some sort of gun, and then a blur; muffled voices, the stench of disinfectant, a scream from somewhere, and then the world had gone black.
‘Okay,’ Zyr thought, squeezing her eyes shut to rub the source of the pain in her neck. She felt a bump where a needle must have broken her skin. ‘I’m not at home. There are no trees here, at all. ...What even is here?’ A squinted, grit-toothed glance around, slower this time so as not to inconvenience her neck. There were some saguaros littering the distance, little patches of brush or grass, and a whole lot of sand.
“Absolutely nothing. Great.” It was then that she swore she heard something crunch behind her, and her ears flattened. She hadn’t thought to look that way.
She stood much faster than she should have, stumbling sideways and nearly running into one of the cacti as she whirled around to see what - or who, really - was coming for her. The fact that she could still hardly see didn't appear to faze her much, though she knew it would be a problem if there was a threat.
